Press release:

The NCAA announced today that eight University of Minnesota athletic programs earned Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Awards this year. These annual awards recognize collegiate programs that score among the top 10 percent of all programs in each sport based on the most recent multi-year APR numbers. Minnesota, along with Michigan tied for the third-highest in the Big Ten, behind Northwestern (13) and Rutgers (9).

"Over the past five years, the University of Minnesota has consistently had one of the highest number of Public Recognition Awards among Big Ten institutions," said J.T. Bruett, director of the Lindahl Academic Center. "Our student-athletes continue to do great work in the classroom and our academic staff and coaches continue to support their academic aspirations."

Baseball, men's cross country, women's golf, men's hockey, men's and women's tennis all extended streaks for picking up APR awards. This year, the Gophers also added women's cross country and women's track & field. It marks the fourth-straight for hockey and men's cross country and sixth-straight honor for women's golf. This year's report also gives women's tennis their seventh-straight honor and eighth-straight for baseball. Men's tennis continues to shine, marking nine-consecutive seasons. It is not only the longest current run for any Gopher program, but holds one of the longest streaks in the country across all sports, dating back to the start of the APR recognition 13 years ago.

The NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate every spring. This announcement highlights teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.

APR provides a real-time snapshot of a program's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent multi-year APRs are based on averages scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.

Single-year and multi-year APRs for all Division I teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced on May 8.
