55 has a WR Theory.......I shared it before

I am not making excuses for anyone's behavior but.......if you violate team rules you should pay for it

BUT!!!!!!

I want remind you guys of all the turnover and acting out we have seen with our wr's. Jones, Barker, Harbison......now Smith.....etc. 55 told y'all before because yall just focus on the kid. Bad kid.....

I think our WR's get frustrated and act out. We have seen no other position group experience the turnover we have seen at WR under Kill now Claeys,

correlation......we don't throw the ball much.

Read Maslow's hierarchy of needs before you attack 55. I've made this argument in the past......it is real. I think our WR's get frustrated and act out and aren't emotionally mature enough to understand what is happening to them. Our second leading reciever only has 17 catches (should be 19)
He drops two and snaps......cause each one is so precious he knows he may be done for the season.

seriously, We have seen some talented WR not even see the field.

This is not a racial issue cause Barker snapped too

Unfortunatly.....I think this trend will continue. Wr's want to do more than just block.

Johnson & Still.....How do we manage them emotionally moving forward?
If I'm crazy as you think, has there been any turnover in any other position group?

I'll hang up and listen.

Actually, ALL of Minnesota's National Championships have a Mississippi State origin...

Bernie Bierman ALSO spent time as the Head coach at Mississippi State in 1925 and 1926. This game has GREAT MEANING for the history of University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Football! There does need to be some sort of plaque or statement honoring our history with this SEC School.

Interesting take from the outside - rating first year coaches

Mike Farrell rates first year coaches in this article and in scanning it at first, just assumed he didn't include Claeys since he started last year. Then I went up the ratings and found he had Claeys tied for first with an A+ rating. Wow. This should be an interesting talker. https://n.rivals.com/news/three-point-stance-jalen-hurd-first-year-coaches-hot-seats

Minnesota vs Bemidji State Game Notes:

First Thoughts:
-This team is so much longer and more athletic than last year's team. Eric Curry is a huge upgrade to the Minnesota front court. I was surprised how active he was on the glass and he was aggressive going to the hoop. He and Murphy were the best Gophers tonight.
-Rim protection will certainly be improved. Reggie Lynch has to work on not fouling, but his shot blocking will be huge for the Gophers and the shots he alters are significant as well. He is a big dude in the lane, just has to stay on the court and play without fouling and he will have a big impact.
-The rotation will be 8-9 guys most games. Mason was of course held out tonight after suffering a concussion, but he will play at least 30 minutes per night when he's healthy. The rest of the guys that will get regular minutes are Coffey, Springs, Murphy, Curry, Hurt, McBrayer, Lynch and a little Konate as well.
-Shooting was an issue for the Gophers at times tonight. The jumpshooting was horrendous and it looked a lot like last year with the amount of open jump shots they missed. A large majority of their points came off of driving layups and offensive rebound put backs. Nate Mason's shooting ability was certainly missed tonight.
-Amir Coffey is going to be a really good player, but he is going to take some time. He has all the physical traits and ability to be an All-Big Ten player, but it won't happen overnight. He is incredibly athletic and almost brought the house down with a monstrous dunk tonight, but he was fouled and it hit the back of the rim. He struggled shooting the ball tonight from the field and went 2-6 from the free throw line. He has to earn the respect of defenders by hitting jump shots as opposed to just trying to get into the lane every play.

Top Performers:
-Jordan Murphy dominated inside tonight, and was an extremely efficient 9-12 from the field for 22 points. The competition was weak tonight, and he won't have it quite as easy on the inside as he did tonight. He also has to show he can hit face up jump shots so that defenders have to respect him and not sag off into the lane. He also looked good on defense and had five blocks on that end of the floor.
-Eric Curry was fantastic tonight. He is a legit 6'9" and he attacks the glass with a vengeance. 17 points and 14 rebounds for the freshman tonight. He has a high IQ, he defends, he has a great shooting touch, the sky is the limit for him. He was the guy that impressed me most tonight.
-Dupree McBrayer had 18 points tonight, which was good for second best on the team. He looks confident and shot the ball that way, but he had a couple ugly misses. He is much better suited as a two guard than as the lead man for this Gopher offense. He has gotten quicker and he excels out in transition, he should be fun to watch this season on the wing.

Things to Improve/Slight Concerns:
-Overall shooting tonight looked very similar to the team shooting the ball last year. 4-19 from three point land, just 52% from the free throw line, that's not going to get it done in Big Ten play. It is only their first exhibition game, but there were plenty of open shots that were missed tonight that need to go down.
-Akeem Springs looked a bit disinterested tonight. I know he is a good player and will help this team this year, but he was extremely passive tonight and seemed to be going through the motions at times. He didn't score in 24 minutes and missed all five of his shots. He also had a few plays on defense where he was slow to get out and guard his man. I expect a much better effort from him when the Gophers take the floor in their first game that counts next weekend against Louisiana Lafayette.
-Staying out of foul trouble. This will be interesting this season, especially for big man Reggie Lynch. He fouled out and only played 14 minutes tonight, and that was against a lacking in size Division II team! Minnesota is much better protecting the rim with him on the court, so we will have to play without fouling quite as much.

Final Notes:
-The talent is there for this team to make at least a 7-8 win jump from last season. Building chemistry in these next few games will be big as there will be early tests in a couple weeks from UT-Arlington and a super young and talented St. John's team. Have to be ready.
-This team is full of great passers with guys like Coffey, McBrayer, Mason, and Curry. But are there enough guys that can put the ball in the hoop?
-Michael Hurt hit two late three's tonight, and that was encouraging. He will definitely play this year and his minutes could go up even more if he is knocking down jumpers with his feet set. If you can shoot, you can play, and this team will gladly take 4-7 points off the bench from Hurt this year if he is hitting his shots.
-It was good to see the Gophers respond to being down early and turning it into a 20 plus point win. Ideally they would have beat that team by 30 plus points, but with so many new pieces this team is figuring out how to play together. Definitely a long ways to go.

Wrestling: Brett Pfarr in NWCA Classic and 2017 Berge commits to PSU

The NWCA All-Star Classic is a prestigious event that starts the first weekend of the College Wrestling season and Gopher Wrestling Captain Brett Pfarr will be a part of it. It's being streamed live on Sat. Nov. 5th at 6pm CT on www.trackwrestling.com.

Gopher Wrestling will be at the Daktronic's Open in Brookings, SD on Sun. Nov. 6th for a one-day tournament along with SDSU, ASU, NE and others. I'll do a separate thread on that by Sunday.

And, in recruiting news, #9 ranked 2017 Brady Berge of Kasson-Mantorville, MN committed to Penn State on Weds. While the Gophers wanted Berge, he is projecting at 149 in college, not 174 where I thought he would be earlier. We have an excellent 149 pounder in Fredy Stroker, so the loss is not so bad. We still really need a 174 pound recruit to fill that hole for the future.

Articles follow on Pfarr and Berge:

Pfarr Ready for All-Star Classic

The Gopher captain will carry on a strong tradition of Minnesota wrestlers in the All-Star Classic, particularly at 197 pounds

On Saturday night, Gopher senior Brett Pfarr will compete in the 51st National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Pfarr, who placed third at 197 pounds in last spring’s NCAA Championships, will take on fellow All-American Brett Harner (Princeton) in one of the night's main event matches. The two have not met in their college careers.

"I'm pretty excited [because] this is something I've never done before," Pfarr told Andy Hamilton of TrackWrestling.com earlier this week. "It should be a great atmosphere and a lot of good wrestling. Not only to compete but watch other really good wrestlers go at it should be very exciting."

Pfarr’s invitation to the event comes after he put together one of the best statistical seasons in Gopher Wrestling history last year. Pfarr went 40-4 in his first year wrestling at 197. He became just the tenth Gopher all-time to reach the 40-win mark in a single season, and the first since 2007. His 18 major decisions were the most by a Gopher in more than 20 years. He also accomplished the rare feat of earning All-America honors both on the mat with his performance at NCAAs, and in the classroom as a CoSIDA Academic All-American.

Pfarr’s match will be the 17th at the All-Star Classic to feature a Gopher in the past 13 years and Minnesota's 34th appearance overall. Pfarr’s weight, 197, is the most commonly represented weight for Minnesota in that span 13-year span, with Roger Kish (2007), Sonny Yohn (2010) and Scott Schiller (2013, 2014) all competing at that weight in the past decade.

His opponent, Harner, finished last season 36-6 and earned All-America honors, finishing eighth at 197 pounds. The placement gave Princeton its first All-American under coach Chris Ayres and the program’s first All-American since 2003. Harner is just the third Princeton wrestler to appear in the Classic, the first since 1985. He hopes to be the first Tiger to win a match in the main event.

The annual preseason showcase will begin at 6 p.m. Central on Saturday from Cleveland State University. The event will be streamed live on TrackWrestling.com. Get updates throughout Pfarr's match by following Gopher Wrestling on Twitter.

Brady Berge (Kasson-Mantorville, Minn.), the nation's No. 9 senior recruit by InterMat, committed to wrestle at Penn State.

He announced his decision Wednesday afternoon on Flo Radio Live.

Berge chose Penn State over Iowa, Oklahoma State and Minnesota. He projects as a 149-pounder in college.

"You look at what they're doing with the guys around my weight class, what the coaches are doing with them, they're developing guys to be the best guys in the country right now," Berge said on Flo Radio Live. "They score a lot of points. That's what I want to do. That's where I want to be, not only the best guy in the country, but scoring those bonus points. It's fun."

He becomes the second top 10 recruit from the Class of 2017 to commit to Penn State, joining No. 5 Nick Lee. Three top 10 recruits from the Class of 2018, No. 5 Travis Wittlake, No. 6 Roman Bravo Young and No. 8 Joe Lee, have also committed to the Nittany Lions.

Berge is a three-time state champion. Last season he broke his leg in his state semifinal match, which caused him to default out of the tournament. Prior to the injury Berge had won 146 consecutive matches and compiled a career record of 234-4.

This fall Berge was victorious at Who's Number One, and captured a Super 32 Challenge title at 152 pounds, earning Outstanding Wrestler honors in the process.

He's both relieved and excited after making his decision.

"It's been a little stressful lately, but I really enjoyed the process," Berge said. "It is a little bit of a relief to get it out there. But I'm really excited for the future, and I'm really excited for Penn State wrestling."
