Away football tickets

I have traveled to an away game for quite a few years running....maybe 15 years....except for last year. I believe the policy changed to instead of buying the away tickets with your home ticket package you now buy at a separate date. So I called the U ticket office and they said road tickets go on sale on June 21st. That seems really late to me. I plan on taking my oldest son to Happy Valley....since I only am about 5800th on Gopher Points ranking, am I assured to get tickets to Penn State? I always like to plan trips in advance with the purchase of plant tickets etc. At which point would I know when I get the tickets for sure?

74th anniversary of Doolittle Raid

Sadly, the survivors stopped having yearly meetings 3 years ago, but its still a cool deal they do.

Those not familiar with the raid should really read up on it if you have any interest in the comings and goings of WWII.

Doolittle raid came on the heels of 4 months of Japan running roughshod in the Pacific...Mandalay, Hong Kong, Singapore, Pearl Harbor, Java Sea naval battle, cornering American/Philippine forces on Bataan. It was militarily insignificant in and of itself, however the ramifications of the raid were magnitudes of significance greater.

The Doolittle Raid was directly responsible for Japan's thirst to score more easterly Pacific islands as early detection of US activities and for jumping off points on attacks on Hawaii and North American West Coast, and they targeted Midway Island. Japanese Military had promised the government and the populace that Japan mainland was impervious to attack due to its many island bases in the Mariana, Marshall, Gilbert and Caroline Islands in the Pacific as well as Indochina, Philippines, Indonesia/Malaysia and Solomon Islands, and after raid, it had egg all over its face.

It was the Doolittle raid coupled with Coral Sea naval draw a couple weeks later in May, coupled with Battle of Midway a month later that gave United States the ability to land on Guadalcanal in August, which ultimately ended up solidifying 1942 as the turning point in the Pacific War (far from certain at the time)

How Midway came to be is something else altogether fascinating too, but that is a topic for another thread...

Spring evaluation spotlight: Recruiting Georgia

The Gophers have done well recruiting recruiting Georgia over the years. Shannon Brooks, Rodney Smith, Duke McGhee Jalen Myrick, basically some of their best skill players come from Georgia.

The incoming class of 2016 has its share of talent as well from Georgia, incuding JUCO transfer and offensive tackle Vincent Calhoun, who came from Southwest Mississippi C.C. and defensive lineman Tai'yon Devers, who the staff recruited out of Georgia Prep Sports Academy. Both Calhoun and Devers performed well during spring practice.

In Georgia, three of Minnesota's top targets -- Sheldon Evans, Jayden Comma and Jordan Tucker, all attend Roswell H.S. Running Sheldon Evans fits the mold of another Brooks or Smith. Defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel is recruiting Georgia and Evans said he will be visited by Sawvel this spring. Minnesota is Evan's biggest offer and only from a power 5 conference. The three-star prospect is ranked 49th in the state and 28th in the nation. Other offers include a few FCS schools.

Receiver Jayden Comma, another three-star recruit, has other Big Ten offers from Maryland and Illinois, along with a few more FCS schools like Evans. Comma is rated the state's 57th best prospect and 89th best receiver in the nation.

Offensive tackle Jordan Tucker has offers from a few SEC schools in Tennessee, South Carolina and Missouri, but also has Maryland in the picture. Though he has bigger offers, Tucker is ranked the 73rd best prospect in the state, which will probably change by the start of the 2016 season.

Getting three for the price of one from Roswell would certainly be good for the staff.

Also in Georgia is another offensive tackle in Caleb Chandler, whose stock is quickly rising this spring with offers from Florida, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Memphis. despite being unranked has more than offers than Evans, Comma and Tucker. J.R. Pace, who is being recruited as an athlete, recently got an offer from Northwestern and has already visited Michigan, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Duke.

The Gophers are also going after some of the most sought after recruits in the nation, namely Georgia-commit Netori Johnson, the No.2-ranked guard in the nation and four-star safety DeAngelo Gibbs. OLB Jaquan Henderosn, who has offers from several BIG schools in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Nebraska. Henderson initially committed to UCLA, but has since decommitted and reopened his recruiting. OLB Solon Page III recently to Tennessee.

While on the trail in Georgia, the staff may also take a look at these 2017 recruits

Several scholarships remain

Apparently we are the anti-SEC instead of worrying about who we will "cut" to get to 85 scholarships we keep 5 or so extra around. I caveat this with I used the scholarship grid as a base.

Any remaining talk about a grad transfer we may take?

Which walk ons could earn scholarships for this year?

Any other transfers but Williams we are talking to?

I love having some flexibility as I bet other teams don't have much but doesn't make sense to not use up our 85.

Sarcasm and real answers welcome

Terrance Lewis offer

Nate Pomeday was over in Wisconsin watching kids and meeting kids today. He has been on Lewis for over a year and watched him Friday night here. Gophers offered the 6-6 Milwaukee small forward today.

Lewis played vs the Hurt brothers in the Target Center and didn't fare that well although scored a lot of late garbage points.

I will see him play in Dallas this weekend.

Gophers offer Matthew Hurt

Matt was at the University of Minnesota today to meet with Richard Pitino on campus and while there Coach Pitino offered Matt a scholarship.

Matthew's brother Michael of course has signed with the Gophers.

Why did it take some time? Word is Coach Pitino and the family thought it best to let Michael have his time and let Matthew grow and deal with a lot of the media hype later but Matthew has exploded so fast that offers are coming everywhere (Iowa, Iowa St, Xavier, Nebraska, Florida, Wisconsin) so it was now time.

But yes the waiting was the staff and the family together. Not just Pitino.

Nathan Reuvers Quotes

This is from another article on another site that I have access to. I won't cut and paste the actual article because that is rude but I will give you some quotes that were spoke in front of reporters in Dallas.

“I am going to see where I am at at the end of April and see if I want to cut things down after that. I have made about 15 unofficial visits.”

Reuvers on Minnesota.

“It is about 30 minutes from my house so I went to a lot of games and they have always treated me well. They didn’t have a great year this year, but they have good guys coming in so I think the future is bright.”

On Notre Dame

“Every year I go (to Notre Dame) for football games. I’ll be down there for most of the home games this year and it is really cool to be recruited by them since I grew up watching them.”

On Badgers

“They have been to the tournament basically the last 18 years. They talk to me about the success they have had with Minnesota guys and they are really telling me about that.”
