Last year's close to the recruiting cycle

Apparently our collective fan recruiting psyche has been bruised with how our class finished as there have been many panicked or very concerned comments about that finish and the huge focus on zero commits so far. Radiant's comment from another thread: "Beginning to think Claeys' brutal closing rate last Feb at NLI day a red flag and not an anomaly" inspired me to review the "finish". So should we be concerned about level of recruiting based upon the evidence so far? I don't think so. A couple of summary points first:

1. Too much focus on Claeys as the recruiter when we know that recruiting success is a function of the entire staff's abilities.

2. We know this staff can identify talent, one of the best in the country at finding talented players that have been essentially overlooked. Any criticisms in this area have been somewhat alleviated with the two new coaches replacing Limegrover and Zebrowski.

3. We as fans tend to overrate the timing of the commits and the positive and negative "momentum" or lack thereof. Instead of focusing on the finished product and how good the class is, our "feel" for the finish colors our judgment.

To be fair, I think you have to review the last couple months of the cycle, the battles we won and lost for recruits, and consider the Gophers circumstances (poor finish on the field, uncertainties in the coaching situation (head coach and then assistants not yet named). Here is how I break it down:

Big Gets (should win these battles some of the time):
1. Durr - fought to the end with V. Tech, and N. Carolina for a southern recruit
2. G. Wright- fought off an offer from TCU who had great back to back seasons
3. Calhoun- picked us over SEC Miss. St. as a southern recruit*
*both o-line recruits picked us with an uncertain situation with Limegrover gone

Other Late Recruiting Wins (should win these battles most of the time):
4. McCrary - with offer from Colorado St. (should win that most times)
5. M. Jackson - picked us over Iowa St. and S. Miss.
6. Green - tough to know who got in the picture late after Oregon situation, but still a good get a high rated qb
7. Devers - picked us over UCF as a Florida kid
8. D. Williams - had Tulane offer and others trying to get in late

Long Shots (major coup if we landed any of these under circumstances):
1. Cushenberry - late LSU offer sealed the loss, but we were in the mix with S. Carolina and Miss St.
2. Castillo - trying to pull him away from verbal of home state Missouri is a long shot, but we were close
3. Thomas - actually had won the battle over N.Carolina and S. Carolina and many other options, but literally last minute Auburn offer was a tough near miss.

Tough To Pull Southern Recruits North if they (or Mom) want to stay home:
4. Byrd- in the mix, but it was clear that he wanted to stay south and committed to W. Forest
5. Lindsey - sounded like a verbal, but mom convinced otherwise and committed to Memphis

Tough Losses:
6. Watts - the one late loss that really hurt as he wasn't necessarily a long shot and it wasn't a location issue. We should be able to win a reasonable portion of battles against Indiana and Pittsburgh

Wild Card:
7. Snelson - not sure even how to characterize this one.

So in summary (and Wren you better read this extremely long post), we actually won more of the fights in the last couple months and when you consider the long shots and the recruits that were likely never to leave the south . . . it's tough for me to believe it is any evidence of Claeys or his staff showing an inability to recruit. Maybe it would have been better if guys like Coughlin, Martin, Howard, Schlueter had waited to firm up until the end, so we would have felt better about how the class finished.

Edited- to take out Battle as we didn't "lose" him to another team

Andries

I'm wondering if that was a done deal well before he committed as it was announced last week by another site. I thought he was a goner to Northwestern myself. Anyway, we should get another couple of offensive lineman soon if the predictions were accurate. I am thrilled as hell. We got the number one player again, and if his other offers mean anything he should be a four star.

Possibly another reason for Ohio State basketball transfers

Thad Matta is going to have to rebuild his staff.. He has lost his 2 top assistants in a short time...

Jeff Boals has been Matta's lead assistant for 7 years... Boals has been an assistant coach for 20 years now so he has paid his dues to become a head coach. He took an assistant job right out of college so he is now in his early 40's. Jeff is from a very small town in Ohio south of Canton towards Amish country.. Less than a 1000 people in the town so taking the Stony Brook job doesn't bother him in the least bit.. Stony Brook is out in Long Island and I think the town is less than 15,000 people. Its far enough away from New York City that it doesn't have the crazy traffic yet he can recruit the NYC metro for players. Heck, he is not real far from the Hamptons one way and can make a day of it going to Manhattan the other, both within an hour or so. It is a sound program as they made the NCAAs so he is going to a good situation.. He left Ohio to coach in West Virginia and in Pennsylvania, earlier in his career, though he was less than a couple hours from Ohio, in both cases.. This will be a new experience for him away from home and Ohio State players will miss that relationship.

Ohio State just lost assistant coach Jake Diebler. Jake's brother, Jon, is Ohio HS all time leading scorer and former Buckeye who now plays abroad. Jake played at Valparaiso so he knows the Drew family really well.. SO that made sense that he went to Vanderbilt to be an assistant for newly named head coach Bryce Drew.

For those that asked about Ohio State having those kids transfer out, this may have been a factor for a couple of the kids leaving as both are great guys.

MN version of Wide 9, 4-3 vs Aransas version of 3-4

Sorry for misspelling Aranda's name, I tried to change it three times and it would not take. This is a question to those of you who really know these defenses. I believe Aranda spent two years implementing the change from a 4-3 to mostly 3-4 at Wisconsin, and generally had great success doing it.
My question for those of you who really know these defenses is that it appears to me we are on the same track because of recruiting issues at DE. We have failed at this point to recruit DEs who can defend the run and rush the passer, and at least superficially recruiting momentum is not on our side.
Against spread teams our D has generally been effective, but we have stopped Wisconsin zero times and Iowa twice in 5 years.
From a practical perspective we have not had a wide DE who can defend the run since the staff has been here.
We have found LBs, we have found DTs (it is not pretty to watch, but we have found them). But we have been getting tweeners to play at rush DE, and it has not worked against great running teams
To some extent it seems we have gone part way on the field by playing LBs at the rush DE position on obvious passing downs. How big a change would it be to recruiting and on the field play to transition to a 3-4 completely over the next two seasons?
Is it a harder change for the coaches or the players?

Spring Game Preview: What to look for on Saturday

IMG_1015_large.png

The game will be played at 12:45 p.m. at TCF Bank Stadium. The Gophers will split into two teams – Gold and White – and will play two 40-minute halves. There will be a 10-minute halftime. The game can be seen live on Big Ten Network and heard live on 100.3 KFAN.

1. Demry Croft. With Mitch Leidner out this spring, Croft has taken reps as the first string QB and he's spent learned the offense from the perspective of a starting QB as Jay Johnson's prototype. Johnson said he will be paying close attention to how Croft manages the game on Saturday. What I think we want to see is how well Croft goes through his progressions, if he's able to read the defense call an audible if he senses a blitz, can he run the hurry up offense and is he turnover prone. Croft will probably play the majority of the game and will be replaced by Seth Green.

2. The 3-4 defense. A 3-4 formation was installed this spring and it will be interesting to see when and how often the defense goes to the 3-4. All spring, the linebackers have been praised as the best unit on defense and this formation plays to the team's strengths.

3. Gary Moore. Moore is a player whose name has surfaced plenty of times in interviews, by coaches and players, as someone who has stood out this spring. Moore, who redshirted last season, has practiced with a lot of motivation this spring and is looking to prove himself. One several occasions, defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel said it was a smart decision to redshirt Moore last season and fans will be able to see what he's capable of. Merrick Jackson did not practice Thursday due to a fever, and he's another player that's been named as a standout at camp, so to see both in action tomorrow should be a treat.

4. Brooks and Smith together. Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith have lined up in the backfield together on occasion this spring so keeping track of how successful that is Saturday will give us a clue of how much the coaches will continue that idea this summer.

5. Wright and Calhoun. Junior college transfers and offensive lineman Garrison Wright and Vincent Calhoun have made significant impacts on the offensive line this spring, not just as far as adding depth, but with the energy they bring. Jonah Pirsig that they have elevated the play of the line with their work ethic and physical nature.

6. Who will step up in the secondary? Damarius Travis will not play much Saturday and with Duke McGee and Ace Rogers out due to injury, Saturday could be a day we see the potential of younger players Ray Buford and Zo Craighton.

7. Physical play of the offensive line. The first team and second team guys are mixed, so fans won't see how well the first team has transformed this spring. Being physical and controlling the battle in the trenches was the number one priority for Minnesota this spring. Tracy Claeys said it and that's why Bart Miller is here. The offensive line has looked better when running the ball, in my opinion, than pass protection, but we'll see on Saturday.

Mykelti Williams did not return messages seeking confirmation if he was going to attend practice tomorrow. Some of the more high profile targets in nearby states, -- LeShaun Minor, the standout DE from Indianapolis, Andrew Van Ginkel, the DE from Iowa Western CC, said they will not attend.

Spring Football: 4.7.16 practice

Team_large.png

Players were allowed to tackle on Thursday and did plenty in goal line situations.

Rodney Smith did well using his agility to make people miss in small amounts of space. While Brooks and Johannesson bring a power running style, Smith's speed and array of moves makes him more versatile.

Smith had a touchdown in the goal line drills and for a small running back, did well in block protection. Brooks hit the hole hard, as usual, as did Johannesson in short yardage situations. Johannesson caught a short screen and nearly scored in another situation. If Minnesota didn't run many screen plays in goal line last season, it looks like they will this season.

During one third and goal situation, Demry Croft was forced to throw the ball away after being blitzed by Winston DeLattiboudere and Scott Epke. Don't know if he didn't see it coming or if the plan was not to audible in that scenario. On the next play, he threw to Rashad Still on the far side corner and Still made an unbelievable one-handed catch, but was called incomplete because he did not have possession while still in bound.

Jalen Myrick intercepted a pass from Conor Rhoda in the end zone. Not sure who the intended target was.

Hunter Register also made a standout catch and run after today.

Wish I could give more description but I arrived late and today was a light practice.

Looking ahead, how the teams will be divided on Saturday was the main topic after practice. The coaches will draft players into two teams and the prize for the winner, as we were told, has something to do with food. Offensively, Jay Johnson said the coaches will finalize those teams Friday and everyone who is able to play on offense will play, including the running backs.

Perhaps the biggest question entering Saturday's spring game, and this is the question I asked Johnson, is how will they use the three quarterbacks in camp during the game. Johnson said the idea will be to have one QB play the duration of the game on one team while two quarterbacks will split time on the other team, Johnson said he may also switch one quarterback, I'm assuming the third string guy, who is Seth Green, to the other team in the second half. I'm assuming Croft will probably play the majority of the game and will be replaced by Green.

Johnson said the main thing he will be focusing on for Croft is his game management, how he stays aware in the pocket, knowledge of the play clock, etc. In the practice that we've seen, Croft has been able to rely on his athletic ability to escape pressure in the pocket, but that was during drills, so it'll be interesting to see if he has the poise to stay in the pocket and let plays develop on Saturday, because he certainly has talented receivers to throw to.

Johnson said he will stay on the field Saturday, rather than calling plays from the booth.

Brandon Lingen did not practice Thursday but Johnson said he's probably for Saturday.

Johnson said he's been most pleased with the running backs this spring an Register and Still as receivers.

LBs_large.png

Defensively, coordinator Jay Sawvel also said every player capable of playing is going to play. Damarius Travis may be pulled earlier in the practice because he's coming off a season-ending injury.

Sawvel went into detail when evaluating some guys on the defense. He said linebacker Julian Huff is a "unique talent" and talked about Huff's progression from being an every down type LB or just a situation guy. "He has a high motor, but sometimes he plays out of control." Of DeLattiboudere, Sawvel said he could be the guy to replace Alex Keith.

Thomas Barber is another guy Sawvel likes. Sawvel likes his physique, saying he has a "real dense body type" and there's "not a lot of give" when trying to move him. Barber has been played some OLB this spring, but Sawvel said that's not a long term plan.

Sawvel said this year's group of defensive tackles could be the best the program has had since he arrived six years ago because of its depth and number of guys with enough talent to be a starter. As far as defensive ends, Sawvel said he's not sure who the standout players will be just yet.

Due to injuries to Duke McGee and Ace Rogers, the safety position is still not settled.

Overall, Sawvel said he's satisfied with the level of play of the defense to this point.

"We've not had a lot of missed assignments, which is always a big thing. I think we played physicial with a lot of guys."

Merrick Jackson did not practice today due to a fever and Sawvel said he's questionable for Saturday, as is DB KiAnte Hardin.

Prospect Watch: Jordy Tshimanga

Above is what I saw from a full game video this morning. I was pretty impressed. Liked him way more than I liked Mo Walker at the same stage (when Mo was a prep) which is the best comparison I can think of. This guy is much nastier, more aggressive, way more effort. Have a look at some of the video. I pointed out time markers in my write-up which could help you make it a quicker watch.

Also, his visit is a family thing. Brother, father is coming in from his weekly work travels, maybe more. This is a family trip to help the young man find the right place.

Ernie Els....ouch

Taking a 9 on hole #1 with a 6 putt from 3 feet. Just horrible to watch. You can cure the " shank", but the "yips" have struck down many a golfer. My Master picks got blown to hell with Ricky Fowler shooting an 80 and Bubba with a 76. How about old Tom Watson at two over. On a sad note, Arnie has really gone down hill from last year. Did not look good in the ceremony tee shot segment.
