Dorsey to Transfer from Minnesota

Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino announced Monday that guard Kevin Dorsey (Waldorf, Md./Clinton Christian HS) will leave the program and seek transfer to another school.

“After discussion with Kevin and his family, we all feel that it is best for him to transfer and get closer to home,” said Pitino. “We wish Kevin nothing but the best moving forward, and will assist him in the process in any way that we can.”

Dorsey completed his freshman season last month, appearing in 26 games in a reserve role. The Maryland native averaged 18.2 minutes per game and totaled 178 points (6.8 ppg), 60 rebounds (2.3 rpg), 37 assists (1.4 apg) and 12 steals (0.5 spg) with six blocks.

A big 'thank you' to Governor Mark Dayton.

If it weren't for him....I'd have never known about bathroom practices in North Carolina.

It's comforting to know that he's so on top of this issue. Issuing a directive for all state employees to avoid travel there. Transgenders in the wrong bathroom could really mess things up for everyone.

Maybe North Carolina should be disqualified from the NCAA Tournament too.

Thoughts....

GREAT BASKETBALL TO END THE YEAR!! Villanova is champs!!

If you would have told me before the game that North Carolina would shoot 64% from the 3 point line and only allow Villanova to get 2 offensive rebounds the whole game, I would have thought Tar Heels in a blow out. Well, Villanova dictated the pace of the game and shot well from the field, 3 point line, and free thrown line and won what was one of the most entertaining ball games I have seen this year. A great last second shot by Kris Jenkins with lots of good storylines and back stories for the game. BEST FINISH TO AN NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP IN A LONG TIME. The notion that North Carolina was so much deeper was just silly as both teams played essentially 8 players with the minutes given to the benches of either team, just about equal.

Jay Wright is my pick to become the next James Bond actor.. Just as cool as the other side of the pillow. It was good for college basketball to see an experienced team that played together for a long time, win the title. I realized another lesson that a coach taught me, years ago. "Its better to have 5 good decision makers with the basketball than 5 good dribblers." Ballhandling is so much more than dribbling ability and Villanova showed that.. North Carolina could not get the game sped up because of that so Villanova dictated the pace of the game. Reminded me in many ways of the '85 Villanova team. The difference is this Villanova team spent time as #1 so it wasn't exactly 'David vs. Goliath' in this game. Loved the coaching that went into this game, the preparation for opponents, guys playing with confidence and execution... If it isnt Minnesota winning, this is the next best way for a college basketball season to end.

Former Badgers football coach thought invite to Minnesota was a joke

About 18 months ago, Bret Bielema was invited to speak at the Minnesota Football Coaches Association’s annual conference on Friday. The former Wisconsin Badgers coach didn’t believe it.

“I said, ‘Yeah, right. These guys hate me,’ ” the current coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks told hundreds of colleagues in a banquet room at the DoubleTree hotel in St. Louis Park.

Before Bielema committed to the speaking engagement, the coaches’ association insisted the offer was genuine. Bielema also said he made sure then-Gophers coach Jerry Kill was on board with the idea.

“So I’m feeling pretty good about it and then I go write it in my calendar, and I write down April 1st,” Bielema said.

The audience burst into hearty laughter at the possible April Fool’s Day joke.

“They’re going to throw some God damn eggs at me as soon as I get introduced,” Bielema continued, with more laughter ensuing.

“So to be here on April Fool’s and be in Minnesota and speak to this group is absolutely awesome,” Bielema said. “Coach (Tracy) Claeys congratulations to you and your staff.”

Claeys spoke to the group earlier Friday night, and Kill introduced Bielema as the final speaker, saying Bielema was one of the first people to call him once health problems forced Kill to step down as Minnesota’s coach in late October. Claeys was named interim coach and got the full-time position with a three-year contract in November.

Bielema spoke about how he and Kill have known each other for about 30 years. He said they’ve remained cordial as they’ve taken different jobs. Bielema became head coach at Wisconsin in 2006, and Kill was hired at Minnesota before the 2011 season.

“The transition happened after another coach you guys had — that I’m not even going to talk about,” Bielema said.

Bielema was 7-0 against Minnesota from 2006-12, including 4-0 against Tim Brewster, the coach Bielema deemed unmentionable.

What's in a college nickname?

The one thing that is great in the Big Ten is that the nicknames are pretty unique and associated nationally, only, with that Big Ten school.. If you are a Gopher, you are from Minnesota.. A Hoosier is only from Indiana.. A Buckeye is only from Ohio State.. Etc, etc.

The only generic nickname in the conference is WILDCATS for Northwestern... But what a special nickname that is nationally for basketball. From 1985 to 1997, 3 teams with nicknames of WILDCATS won the national championship in basketball(Villanova, Kentucky, and Arizona)... There is one team in almost all top conferences that has the nickname of WILDCATS.

Big East - Villanova, Big Ten - Northwestern, Big 12- Kansas State, PAC 12 - Arizona, SEC - Kentucky..

IN NCAA FOOTBALL, the teams in the South love the nickname, TIGERS... The SEC has 3 teams with the nickname, TIGERS and all have different school colors(Missouri, Auburn, and LSU).. 3 Southern schools with nickname of Tigers have won national championships in football in my lifetime, (Auburn, LSU, and Clemson).

Maybe the key for Minnesota is to change the name of their basketball team to the WILDCATS and football to the TIGERS so national championships will be on the way in no time...Just kidding.

1 report or article per day is plenty on FB now. There is no recruiting happening.

Please people, what is with all the whining? Don't blame GI for the fact that no FB news is happening. The GI staff is writing an article each day it seems on the boring practices....and that's plenty. There is zero recruiting news, and that is not GI's fault.

Do you really expect detailed notes every day from a boring practice?? Even though I like Pitino, I don't ask for daily practice notes. Geez.

I'm not trolling you guys. But what happens in practice has zero effect on anything. This site is for recruiting news.

Colton Beebe

ok, sorry if I tricked you to read this, thinking I had some info.

Actually, Beebe was one of the guys that most were raving about from last years class as a total stud recruit. I was hoping someone had some info on him. Is he slated to be a TE? or defense? Any idea how he has looked this spring?

Thanks

Gopher baseball takes series against Iowa

Minnesota split a double header today to take the home series against Iowa.

In two games Sunday, Matt Fiedler had five hits, including two home runs and touted a team-high five RBI. Connor Schaefbauer added a pair of solo homers, while Austin Athmann added one as part of his three hits in the two games.

Iowa won the first game 6-3 but Minnesota won the second 6-3. Minnesota is 15-10 and 2-1 in conference play.

In-state DB Malik Lofton talks about wanting a U of MN offer.

Leftovers from Saturday's practice.

Demry Croft continues to prove himself as the uncontested No 2 behind Mitch Leidner and frankly, the future behind center. After taking all of the first team reps this spring and being the prototype for Jay Johnson's offense, Croft is setting himself up to be the starter in 2017 and is good for a 1500 + 500 season in his first year as a starter.

Cody Pook, in his first season with the program last season, finished as the the second leading tackler on the team, Pook made a highlight tackle in the backfield on Rodney Smith, a preview of what should be a reoccuring theme in 2016. Pook said his success in 2016 will certainly help him this year.

Special teams looked sharp. In practice on Saturday, Emmit Carpenter made a 43 yard FG in practice. Andrew Harte attempted a 54 yarder, had the distance, but was wide right.

Freshmen DBs: Ray Buford and Zo Craighton are proving themselves in practice and will add quality to the secondary's depth when the 2016 begins. Buford stoodout Saturday, tackling Jonathan Femi-Cole in the backfield for a loss while Craighton broke up a potential touchdown catch in the end zone during 11 on 11 drills.

Since Minny will end spring ball a week early....................

I take it that the staff will hit the road a week ahead of the staffs of the other B10 Teams (other than Michigan)

This should give them a bit of an edge.

Also, G.I. should also step things up a notch. Their staff is larger than SCOUT, it would be great for G.I. if it would break info on the coaches travels for the upcoming month prior to SCOUT/RB.

To me, its about the obvious: Will the units look crisp in the spring game?

I like speed and quickness as much as anyone.. But our niche has to be crisp execution, at all the positions.. We want to be athletic, but I hope that is not the main 'take away' from spring as saying "We are athletic" is always relative.. We aren't 'athletic' compared to the Michigan States, Ohio States, Michigans in the Big Ten, most of the time. When I think of 'CRISP", I am thinking the o-line from when Maroney and Barber were running behind that line. "Crisp" is when a receiver runs a good route and the ball is right there when the receiver turns his head. Then, be able to improvise well when a play 'goes to pot'. Jet sweeps sound great and sexy to say, but the most athletic opposing teams will have coaches that read those formations, and have DBs and LBs waiting on the other side that can run with anyone.. We aren't going to "OUTATHLETE" the Buckeyes, Wolverines, or Spartans.. Maybe catch them in a safety blitz or a safety sneaking up to the line towards the middle of the defense where that jet sweep can be effective around the end. Even then, we still have to maintain our blocks. We have to execute with sharpness to be competitive.

Defensively, I know the DBs will be there.. Sounds like the LBs as well. My concern is still the lines and D-line has to be sharp.. Otherwise, you have to get help from the LBs and DBs. That is when the defense falls apart is when the d-line needs the help. When the d-line struggles, everyone has to shift up towards the line and responsibilities intermediate and deep, get exposed.. The nice thing about the spring game is to see what needs to sharpen up but when you are a program like ours, crispness in execution is what we HAVE TO HAVE, coming out of the summer.. Without Mitch, things wont be great but we gotta see some of that sharpness even without him or we wont get to that 8-9 win season.

MEMORY LANE....Gophers beating #1 Michigan 16-0 in 1977

How did we do it?? The thing I like about this board is there are people that remember games 40 years ago. I was so young but a big Gopher fan then and I was running around the house like Minnesota won the national championship when i heard the score.. How did we beat them?? Was Trestman, Carlson, or Avery the QB?? I am guessing Kent Kitzman was the FB at the time. I think the game was at Memorial Stadium but could anyone recollect the day and your feelings on the game??

I am guessing that Michigan had Rick Leach so we must have played great defense in that game. I remember Paul Rogind was the kicker but that is about it.
