Football Recruiting Inside Gophers Nation: Pre-Early Signing Period + Transfer Portal notes

The early signing period is coming up here starting on Wednesday and running through Friday. So let's take a long look at what this week could look like for the Nittany Lions.

The Gophers enter this week with 21 commitments and a top-50 recruiting class nationally. Should Gophers fans expect any signing day/week surprises?

Football 2024-25 Transfer Portal Thread

Lets Go Start GIF

Transfer portal season is upon us. Well, technically, next Monday. That being said, the new magic number is 105. The Gophers are currently at 114 on the roster but 16 Gophers are in their last year of eligibility, moving that number to 98. HOWEVER, they're set to add 21 recruits as part of their 2025 recruiting class to the roster this week which puts them at 119 players. There are obviously a few players who could leave early for the draft and someone like Ersery will do so but all in all, the Gophers need to see at least 14 players this offseason leave the program for the draft or the portal, just to get to the 105 limit for next season. That is of course, without adding any transfers.

TLDR: Expect to see plenty of transfer protal movement for the Gophers this offseason, especially leaving.

A couple post regular season observations

Corey Hetherman has been a fantastic hire. Produced a Top 15 defense nationally. Fleck identified and hired a good one.

A guy who flies under the radar for me is Kerry Brown. I really like him. Fast, good ball skills, and will lay a lick on you.

If ever there was a coach on the field type of guy, it's Brosmer. We hit a home run in the portal with him. I wish we had him longer, but I'm also looking forward to seeing Lindsey develop.

I feel like Harbaugh really grew as an OC this season. Brosmer helped him open the playbook. It was fun to see.

I hate to think what could happen in the 20 day portal window. I really hope we can retain most of our guys, but know we'll lose some.

Signing Day is just a few days away. Always fun to see who joins the team. GO GOPHERS!

There's a new Coach's Corner out today with Coach Eggum!
He liked the very aggressive way we wrestled last week against Bucknell and at the Daktronics Open!!

And we have a big weekend coming up with a Friday night 6pm dual at NDSU in Fargo and a 1pm home dual vs. Campbell!! That match will mark the return of Gable Steveson, so come on out and welcome him back!!!

Jay Sawvel

First- year Wyoming head coach and former Gopher DC Jay Sawvel led his 2-9 Cowboys to a 15-14 come from behind win over 8-3 Washington State tonight.

Sawvel was special teams and DB coach at Minnesota from 2011-15, moving up to DC and DB coach in 2016. He moved on to Wake Forest as DC and CB coach in 2017-18.

From 2020-23 Jay was DC and Safeties coach at Wyoming, and took on the head coaching job this year.

Buckle up when the transfer portal opens December 9th

It's open for a 20 day window, and we are going to see player movement that is mind blowing. Hundreds, if not thousands of players at the FCS and FBS levels will be on the move.

I think you'll even see all conference-type players leaving for NIL (money) opportunities elsewhere. Plus, there's a 105 player roster limit going forward, so some guys are simply gonna get squeezed out through no fault of their own.

It's gonna be really, really wild. I'm not sure how you coach in this environment, but good luck to Fleck and company.

OL Aaron Thomas impressed with program atmosphere after Minnesota visit

"I really like the atmosphere of the program."

2026 OL Aaron Thomas soaked in the gameday atmosphere at Minnesota last weekend for the team's game against PSU.

Thomas goes in-depth on his visit and discusses where the Gophers stand in his recruitment:
