Fortune: Grizzly Misstep: Security Experts Call Russia Hacking Report “Poorly Done,” “Fatally Flawed

On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI released a joint report about Russian cyberattacks, titled “Grizzly Steppe.” The report had been expected to lay out more details about intelligence agency’s claims that the Russian government was directly linked to hacks on the DNC and other organizations, but security experts have expressed broad disappointment with the report.

Jeffrey Carr, author of Inside Cyber Warfare, wrote on Friday that the report “adds nothing to the call for evidence that the Russian government was responsible” for the campaign hacks. Robert Lee, a former Air Force cyberwarfare officer and cybersecurity fellow at New America, argues that the report is of limited use to security professionals, in part because of poor organization and lack of crucial details.

Get Data Sheet, Fortune’s technology newsletter.

The report, Carr says, lists hacking groups previously suspected of Russian government ties, mostly identified by commercial security firms, “without providing any supporting evidence that such a connection exists.” That evidence may still remain classified, but Carr says that if so, it should be reviewed by an independent commission, because the White House targeting of Russia “is looking more and more like a domestic political operation run by the White House”.

Lee is much less skeptical of the White House, calling the accusations against the Russian government “a strong and accurate statement.” But he highlights extensive sloppy mistakes and limited practical data in the Grizzly Steppe report. A list of names used to identify hacking campaigns, such as APT28 and COZYBEAR, inexplicably mingles in the names of both malware tools and capabilities. Data intended to help network administrators block attacks is missing vital IP addresses and attack timelines.

Lee also says descriptions of the techniques of the groups profiled is “very generic,” and of little use for network defense. He concludes that Grizzly Steppe “seems like a very rushed report,” and speculates that any useful data was removed during the review and approval process.

The flaws of the Grizzly Steppe report could become grist for those skeptical of White House and security agencys' claims of Russian hacking—most notably, President Elect Donald Trump. He and his supporters largely see the accusations against Russia as an attempt by President Obama and Democratic allies to discredit the incoming President. But political anxiety over the lack of evidence is simmering elsewhere, too. Writing on Friday, left-wing commentator Matt Taibbi described the Grizzly Steppe report as “long on jargon but short on specifics,” and part of a broader pattern of government overstatement with “an element of salesmanship.”

Trump isn't draining the Swamp; he's filling it with the most corrupt, unqualified cabinet in...

'President Obama has appointed as Secretary of Energy versus who Trump has appointed. Obama’s first Secretary of Energy was Steven Chu — a Nobel Prize winning physicist who is currently the Professor of Physics and Professor of Molecular & Cellular Physiology at Stanford University. He has a B.A. in Math, a B.S. in Physics, and a Ph.D. in Physics from Berkeley.

After Chu served the Department of Energy for four years, he was succeeded by Ernest Moniz — who earned his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Stanford University. Moniz went on to join the faculty at MIT and eventually became the head of the physics department and co-chair of the MIT Research Council. These men are brilliant.

Trump just appointed Rick Perry — who failed his college chemistry course and had a transcript riddled with C’s & D’s. The former governor of Texas struggled his way into earning a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M. He doesn’t have any graduate degrees. He is famous for saying that if he became president, he would disband the Department of Energy, but he couldn’t even remember the name of the department.

These dropoffs in education level between the Obama Administration and the incoming Trump administration aren’t rare....'

Minnesota vs. Purdue game thread

EJ and I previewed Purdue here. GoldandBlack.com also has a good preview from a Purdue perspective that can be read here.

Purdue is ranked No. 15 and is full of talent. They have two potential NBA talents in Caleb Swanigan and Isaac Haas down low who are both very effective on the block. They surround Swanigan and Haas with very good three-point shooters around the perimeter.

Nate Mason named co-B1G player of the week

Press release:

Fresh off a record-breaking performance in the Minnesota men’s basketball team’s overtime win at Purdue, junior guard Nate Mason has been recognized as the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week.

It is Mason’s first such honor and the second weekly award for the Gophers this season. Mason was selected the conference freshman of the week on Dec. 22, 2014.

Mason averaged 24.5 points per game during the Gophers’ narrow overtime loss to Michigan State and overtime victory at the 15th-ranked Boilermakers. On Tuesday in the conference opener, Mason led the team with 18 points, adding five rebounds and four assists.

Sunday evening in West Lafayette, Mason became the first Gopher to score more than 30 points and 10 assists in a single game, as he led all players with a career-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting. His 11 assists were one shy of his career high, which also came against Purdue on Jan. 27, 2016. Mason added six rebounds and two steals while turning the ball over just once.

The Decatur, Ga., native became the first Gopher to score 31 since Andre Hollins did so against Rutgers on Jan. 17, 2015. His 11-assist total ties for eighth highest in program history. Mason shared the award with Nebraska’s Glynn Watson.

Mason and the Gophers return to action on Thursday evening, traveling to Northwestern for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off against the Wildcats.

Congrats to the Great Bobby Bell

Congratulations to the Great Bobby Bell. Just saw him riding in the Rose Bowl parade where it was anounced he is being inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. Never saw Bronko Nagurski or Bruce Smith (Heisman winner) play, so in my eyes, he was the best Gopher player ever. His accolades as a college player and NFL player are unmatched. He is still racking up rewards even as of today, 56 years after playing in the Rose Bowl.

Annual Holiday Drinking Thread

So it is that time of the year again. I like to drink during the rest of the year too, especially the concoctions that umfb's wife comes up with for tailgates, but Christmas and New Years are special. So tonight, with Oyster Rockefeller I had a couple of Oscar Blues Ten Fidy's. Not the ideal pairing, but like strong, dark beers this time of the year.

Anyway, Ten Fidy; very dark (motor oil), smooth, high alcohol beer with nice chocolate and coffee flavours. It is an Imperial Stout. Very dark head. Extremely tasty, would do again. Excellent rating. One left.

What say you DT, what is on your drinking menu this holiday season?

Richard Pitino postgame presser notes

  • I have so much respect for Purdue, their players, and Coach Painter. It's a great win because we really, really respect them.
  • I thought we did a good job on Swanigan, but he had 28 points and 22 rebounds.
  • I thought our guys really stepped up. Amir Coffey and Eric Curry as freshman stepped up and made plays. Jordan Murphy was really, really good. Dupree McBrayer made big player as a sophomore. Reggie Lynch had five blocks and obviously gave us a lot.
  • I'm trying to tell everyone that Nate Mason should be considered one of the better guards in the league, and no one really mentions it. I'm proud of him to break through against a very good defensive team.
  • The word we used was respond. That's the word I wrote on the board. They did that. There was no sleepwalking at the beginning of the game. We knew they would throw punches back at us, which they did.
  • This is one of the harder places to play in the country.
  • When you're older guys have great poise, it helps out. I thought the older guys had a great second half.
  • It's great to get off to a good start after the Michigan State loss. Our poise and confidence was really, really good.
  • Eric Curry has great talent. We don't talk about it locally because he's not from Minnesota, but nationally, I think a lot of people have respect for him. When you get a kid like Amir, people talk about it, which I totally get. But we thought we got a steal in Eric. I'm excited because we got a very young team.
  • We had a long, tough offseason, and we deserved that offseason. But it's nice for them to feel some success. A young team to try and find a way to break through on the road in a tough environment against a terrifically-coached team with some great players. We'll celebrate tonight and move on.
Brian Neubert from GoldandBlack.com gets the assist for these notes.

Please join me in congratulating @kcgorilla on this honor!

Sawvel

Whether Claeys is retained is yet to be determined, and it sounds like Tuesday we may hear something. I just hope that Sawvel stays on board if Claeys is retained. Jay is going to get some very lucrative offers to jump ship and I hope The U admins haven't pissed him off too much. Can you imagine what Sawvel would be able to do with the talent OSU has on D?

***New PWO commit

Totino-Grace wide receiver/safety Joe Russell announced his commitment to Minnesota. Russell also had an offer from Montana State.

Russell was named to Kare 11's All-Defense team this year. He had 17 receptions for 278 yards and five touchdowns on offense, and 58 tackles, three interceptions, and a forced fumble on defense.
