Main points from postgame presser

Claeys
  • Lost because "we got whipped up front".
  • Defensive backs were physical and tight on our receivers.
  • Sloppy and poor timing with the snaps caused the illegal motion penalties.
  • Proud of the defense.
  • No update on Jonah Pirsig.
Shannon Brooks
  • Thought the holes were there.
  • Locker room was "quiet" and "hurt" after the game.
  • Iowa was really physical.
Jon Celestin
  • The defense had a good day other than one bad play.
  • This loss hurts more than Penn State.
  • Still have a chance to reach our goals and get to Indianapolis but it's going to be a long road.
  • Great to see Sherels back on the sidelines.
Nick Rallis
  • The defense was one play away from playing a complete game. One big play is one too many.
  • They ran one back power and they didn't do that last year.
  • Celestin can do it all. Excited to see his future.

I changed as a fan today . . . . . . . . .

I have been a Gopher Football fan for 45 years. I predicted the Gophers would go 8-4 this year. I have seen too many Gopher Teams not live up to expectations, so didn't get caught up in the 10-2 or 11-1 hype.

Honestly, today's game was a shit show from start to finish. One of the storied rivalry games, and they came out completely lifeless. I did not see any intensity anywhere on the field today. When Coach said this was the best team yet since they had been in MN, I believed it. I thought perhaps this would be the year, but had a wait-and-see attitude.

Now I know why..

How can a team take so many penalties this far into the season?
Delay of game coming out of a penalty on the previous play? Inexcusable.
Taking a penalty for not knowing how to line up on a punt? Inexcusable.
Not allowing the offense to be set on a play when the clock was not even running? Inexcusable.
An offense that looks like a High School package? Inexcusable.
Not coming out with full intensity in a huge rivalry game? Inexcusable.
No first down until 4 minutes left in the first half? Embarrassing.
A 5th year quarterback bouncing 8 yard passes this late in his career? Puzzling.

Honestly, I am close to checking out for the balance of the season. Have never done that before, but I am sick to death of an offense where nearly every single play can be predicted from my living room chair.

I was taking a wait and see with Coach, but he and his staff lost a long time fan today. I just can't watch this shit show any longer.

We can't know what positions need talent upgrades until we are disciplined

I saw a real absence of fundamentals on offense.. Penalties cannot exist like that. We get in 2nd and longs or 3rd and longs, way too often. I know our guys are trying but we have to get people on the field that play with discipline, even if they are walkons.

DO we have players outside our RBs that play with discipline and confidence on offense?? I honestly don't know. But those are things that have to be in place to evaluate whether we lack in talent or not. Our guys are beaten up emotionally right now, I am sure.. Maybe even some fingerpointing going on but guys have to play with discipline to figure out how to turn this around. Not sure what punishment needs to be doled out but any receiver that drops the ball for lack of concentration or any penalties that are discipline related must be punished swiftly. Don't know how to get the QB position fixed right now. Guys can turn it around but we need to find our leaders on the team and show some pride for the future... That should be the start to getting back on track.

Jobs on the line

I really believe Claeys will have a long term deal by the end of the season, or will be fired. Beating or losing to Iowa will go a LONG ways toward either direction. Winning or losing rival games at home, when you have a great chance to win will cement his future.

I have to believe 8-4 locks up Claeys, and 6-6 or worse gets him fired. 7-5 is the bubble. It's hate week, I'm amped up, been trash talking all week, can't wait, 23 hours until kick!

Reason NOT emotion thread...why I am on the fire Claeys train

We had better athletes than iowa on the field today.

We are so undisciplined. Penalty after penalty.

Terrible time management ...again.

Terrible use of our running game and play calls today. 21 total carries for our 2 studs. Then when we do pass, you need to take the safety out of the picture if you are going to throw underneath to your slot WR being defended by a LB. We ran numerous plays where not one WR was deeper than 7 yards. That is junior high style football.

Did anyone see the D Line on the 2 point conversion? We had 1 ...yes 1 guy left of their Center. They had 3. Of course the guy is going to get 3 yards. I am confused as that is unacceptable in high school football let alone B10 football.

Zero emotion from our coach. These are 18-22 year old athletes. They need motivation from their leader.

0 trophies. 1 B10 win in how many games ?

I am done. I don't mind losing. The way we are losing though is not acceptable. It is fully on the coaching staff.

Let's get the right coach in here this offseason as I think we have some talent that simply needs to be coached up on the roster.

Postgame presser: Claeys blames OL, says defense played well

Link: Postgame presser: Claeys blames OL, says defense played well

On the reason they came up short...
"I mean, it's pretty obvious. We got whipped up front. The offensive line, we couldn't create some space. The pass protection in the pocket was a lot more tighter and they got pressure up in Mitch's face without blitzing. On those days that you get whipped up front, you don't have a very good chance."

On Mitch Leidner...
"He could never set his feet because he had to get the hell out of the way. The protection wasn't any good, so I think that leads to the inaccuracies. Same thing with the receivers, though. I mean it wasn't pass interference. They were tight on the receivers and physical on the receivers. We didn't have as big of windows as we've had in the past."

On Shannon Brooks not getting very many touches until later in the game...
"I mean, the one though was a hold. But I mean we were just struggling up front; that's all there was to it."

On the pre-snap illegal motion penalties...
"Yeah, that's Mitch. He's got to make sure that back is set. A couple times it was the offensive tackle too. He and Drew just got to hurrying things a little bit too quick. That's the thing -- we didn't have the timing and we were sloppy. We still battled and had a chance at the end. Didn't quite get her finished, but it's a tough day on offense. You'd like to get a stalemate up front to get chances and we didn't even have that."

On if injuries played a role in the offensive line's poor play...
"You can always go looking for excuses but the bottom line is you got to do it. We got injuries up there a little bit, but you got to find a way to get it done. That's their job description."

If Iowa's did anything different defensively...
"No, they just do what they do. They whipped us up front."

On the importance of trophy games for his team...
"It's more than the guys; it's the whole state. It's two states battling against each other, so it's disappointing. I mean, great ball game as far as staying close to the end. Both sides battled, both teams did. Defensively, I'm proud of them. Defensively we played well enough to win. Offensively, we didn't, and in this conference we're going to have to have both sides play together to get the win."

On the importance of getting pressure on CJ Beathard...
"I thought our D-Line did awfully well. Coverage was good. I mean I wasn't disappointed with the defense. But up front, I think we got after them up front as much as their D-Line got after us, but they made a couple more plays. So we'll go back to work."

On what was working defensively...
"The kids were in a position to make some tackles and they did up until that last drive.

Week 5 Prediction Thread:. Golden Gophers vs. iowa

djwerd and Slab of Bacon are last week's winners. Unfortunately, we as fans were all losers.

On to the game against the inbred trailer trash...

I predicted 6-6 at the season's start. I saw tons of red flags last Saturday. That said, ...

I can't pick iowa. I can not let my negative attitude and years of "being a let down fan" effect me.

At halftime things look a little scary...

iowa 14
Gophers 7

The second half is the coming out party for a couple Gopher WR's. We put up 160 yards in the air. We get a key 4th down stop to seal the Victory and Floyd is ours again...

Golden Gophers 24
iowa 21

What say y'all ?

On if it felt like the defense played really well but may have lost it from one bad play...
"Yeah, I mean that one play, but I feel like all around we were swarming the ball. We kind of got into a rythym and either stopped them from getting a field goal or got a turnover, so overall, I thought we had a pretty good day."

On the locker room after the game...
"I feel like this one hurt, more than Penn State. We had this one in our hands, basically the whole game. We executed, but it's just something we need to get better on, especially losing at home."

On if he's worried about buy-in or the team not reaching their goals...
"Not at all, this was not something we planned on doing; this was somebody in our division. But at the same time, they lost to Northwestern last week. We still have a chance to reach our goals and push through and reach Indianapolis, but it's going to be a long road basically. We have to take it one game at a time."

On Sherels being on the sideline...
"It was an awesome feeling. Throughout this whole process, to come back to the sidelines and see him was amazing because he lives and dies for the game of football."

On how much energy he brings...
"He brings a lot of energy because he was just in our shoes just a few years ago. He tries to make sure we have fresh bodies out there all the time. It means a lot to us."

Postgame presser: Shannon Brooks

On if he was surprised he and Rodney Smith only got 21 carries...
"Not really, honestly. That's one of things that you're not in control of and you trust the coaches to do their job. I believe in the staff. We have a great, great staff here. I believe in our offense and that they make the right call, so whatever they call, I'll go with it."

On what Iowa did to limit the rushing attack...
"We knew going in, it was going to be a tough game, just like the other games this season. You know you have to play all four quarters and come out and dow hat we did in practice. They are a physical team. This is Big Ten play. We just have to keep working and practicing as an offense and keep moving forward."

On any positives from the game...
"Definitely, we will have close games later on in the season. You can't expect to go out and just blow out another opponent. It's a tough loss, playing in a rivalry game, but you just have to move forward. This is going to teach us a lot as an offense."

On what the locker room was like after the game...
"Just quiet because it's a tough loss. It's a huge game that we've prepared years and years for. It's a big rivalry so it was kind of a hurt feeling in the locker room."

Having a poster be a moderator

A lot of sites on the Rivals network have a poster or two or three be a moderator in addition to the "regular" moderators. Would that be something you guys would be interested in? I don't have time to go through every post on Dinkytown XIX and think my time is better spent producing and managing the content for this site. That being said, I certainly understand the value and need of having a properly-moderated board.

If you guys were to vote "yes" to wanting a poster as a moderator, I would ask for anyone interested in being a mod shoot me a private message or email. Then the board would vote on who the new mod would be.

Also, I understand that this has always been a loosely-moderated board and that the majority of you want it kept that way (believe me, I have received many emails when I delete posts). I'm not at all trying to be the fun police, but I do think it's best if there's some, albeit probably mild, moderation.

Thoughts?

Coaching....it boils down to Coaching

think about it. You could tell Sherels was back. Much less rotation. The defense was more stout.

And you could tell the entire offense was totally out of sync, no way Johnson could totally be here physically or mentally after losing his dad (understandable).

Coaching shows on the field

Finally, we had a DB make two huge critical mistakes and had never played meaningful snaps since he's been here.

We had a linebacker in on a critical 3rd down late in the game. That has only played on special teams. As a true freshman.

Just weird management of personnel.

We played right into iowa's hands on offense. Predictable conservative play
Calling until we are desperate.

Speed the game up and still run. Get brooks and Smith 20 touches a piece.

55 just wants to see BIGTIME football. Even if you lose, just look good and compete. I can live with that.

Our tactics are not elite.

Iowa game thread

I don't see Duke McGhee (concussion) warming up. Rashad Still is warming up, as expected. The defensive line isn't on the field yet, but I expect Taiyon Devers to for sure warm up and probably play, too.

The Gophers will honor Sam Foltz and Mike Sadler at the coin toss.

The Cowboys, Dolphins, Bears, Texans, Browns, 49ers, Jags, Saints, Chargers, Chiefs, Lions, Jets, Panthers are all at the game today. The Fiesta Bowl, Citrus Bowl, and Outback Bowl are all here too.

Very light crowd so far as I think people don't want to take on the cold until they have to.
