39 Days: Florida recruiting trail

Beginning Friday, Minnesota coaches will hit the road for the beginning of the spring 39-day evaluation period, where they can evaluate student-athletes athletic ability and academics. 16 states allow high school football for the spring period, one of them being Florida.

Florida spring ball begins April 25. Entering the evaluation, Minnesota has offered four players from Florida:

Erin Collins, Armwood HS, RB
Nick Brahms Navarre HS OT
Bobby Roundtree, Largo HS, DL
Jordan Scott, Pinellas Park HS, DL

Largo and Pinellas Park are within 15 miles of each other and Armwood HS is about 20 miles southeast of that area. When these coaches visit these players, they are going to hear about other possible targets in that area from high school coaches, and probably from other college scouts they run into on the recruiting trail. Here's a list of possible targets Minnesota coaches come across and offer for 2017.

CJ Cotman, Clearwater Central Catholic, ATH: Dynamic athlete. Elusive in the open field. He would be the next Eric Carter, essentially.

Decalon Brooks, Gaither HS, LB: Son of Hall of Famer and former Buccaneer Derrick Brooks. Getting some offers, a 3-star commit with an offer list that includes Illinois. Dad played at FSU, so it'll be interesting if he wants to follow in dad's footsteps there, although he could flourish elsewhere.

Antoine Thompson, Plant City, WR: Wisconsin is the lone BIG school to offer so far. Played on the other side of Clemson commit TJ Chase last year. Speed, good hands, a list of a dozen offers but only three from P5 schools.

Steven Ogletree, Plant City, LB: Three-star recruit with about a dozen offers, including Wisconsin. Will probably be best LB the coaches see or hear of while in that area.

Malik Davis, Jesuit, RB: Surprised they offered Erin Collins before Davis, since Davis was top 5 in the state with over 2,000 yards. David has at least 15 offers, but only one from the Big 10, Maryland.

Then there's the IMG Academy factor. Everyone knows IMG Football is a factory for the nation's top talent. They spew 4 and 5 star players, but the 3 stars on that team are potential All-Americans.

Each day, I'll try to list the recruits the coaches will try to see in person during this period, and possible targets they could end up offering.

Gopher Football in the Past

I know some of you have been Gopher fans for a lot longer than I have (I'm a 21 year old student here), but I am just trying to get a grasp on how things used to be when we were competing for conference and national championships in football. It just seems like in today's day and age the schools with the top recruiting classes always seem to consistently put the best teams on the field, with of course some outliers every now and then. Since they started tracking recruiting online in the early 2000's we have always known which programs are reeling in the top players every year, and recruits see these and want to be a part of these great programs. How did we know about good players in the 60's and 70's when we were competing for national championships and going to Rose Bowl's? Now-a-days our classes are made up of mostly 2 and 3 star guys with maybe (If we're lucky) 1 or 2 four star guys. How are we expected to compete with the Michigan's and Ohio State's of the world who are bringing in 14 or 15 four and five star guys each class? It will be very difficult no doubt, but recruiting is huge when determining the ceiling that a program has.

AD chatter

Last night I tuned into the Sports Show for the first time in about 10 years because I saw a buddy of mine (AP Guy) was gonna be on.

Both Sid and AP guy said they believe Beth G will get the job. Max sort of had a "I know something you don't know" grin on his face and mentioned NIU AD Sean Frazier.

I don't know about you but I would take a former Alabama football player as the next AD. Football would be of high priority at the U.

Thought?

McShay on BBC

Todd McShay had a report today on his first three rounds of draft picks for each NFL team. With the 97th overall pick (3rd Round) he has the Seattle Seahawks selecting BBC.

Eric Murray, once hailed as a possible first round pick is not listed in McShay's top three rounds.

Also, even tho Bradger was willing to bet his business with anyone who wanted in, Christian Hackenberg will not be the first QB drafted in the year he elected to enter. He will be taken by the LA Rams in the second round.

Crown Royal

Northern Harvest Rye. Won the world championship for whiskey around the early December of something like that. Anyone try it? Thoughts?

I was finally able to get a bottle here and tried it tonight. I had it on the rocks, next time neat. I found very smooth, caramel and vanilla flavours and a bit smokey. However, pretty reasonable price for a nice drink of rye

Season Ticket renewals

I renewed mine for this year (not sure on future) after I go over the initial sticker shock. I didn't renew right away for no reason other than I just hadn't. Anyhow they called me 7 times last week before I finally renewed on Thursday. I don't know if that means nothing, means they are trying to do a better job of customer service or if they're worried that people weren't renewing. Anyone hear anything?
