It is hard for me to think time has gone by this quickly... SO many memories of that great Gopher team.... I try to set aside the academic scandal and enjoy the memory of that magical season.... Bobby Jackson was a star.. Sam Jacobson not far behind in greatness.... Eric Harris was the PG and floor leader on defense.... Courtney James such a great defender, passer, and rebounder.. Key moments for Charles Thomas... Miles Tarver gave them toughness off the bench.. Trevor Winter was the big man from outside the metro whereas John Thomas was the big from the metro... Quincy Lewis played huge minutes as a freshman. Played so unselfish as a team.. Awesome memories..
Do you remember when we were down by 7 AT INDIANA with less than a minute to go, sent the game to OT with 3 straight 3-pointers, and won???? Sam took over a few games.. The Gophers had some close ones that year, as I remember.... Bobby Jackson was elite.
If I had some bad memories, it was the injury to Harris in the tournament.. I swear we could have beaten Kentucky if Eric Harris was healthy.. The other memory that was not so good is when Wisconsin beat us at their place with Sam Okey and Paul Grant as their stars... I had a pit in my stomach when Ty Calderwood of the Badgers hit those free throws to ice the game when Minnesota had a huge comeback led by Sam Jacobson...One of the last games I remember at the old Wisconsin Field House. Oh well, more than offset with the great memories.
The Clemson and UCLA tournament games have to be in the top 10 games the Gophers ever had in the tournament.. I thought I was going to hyperventilate because the Gophers won, in both cases... Clem Haskins was such a great game coach... I was so proud to be a Gopher and still am to this day... If you are too young to remember, try to get a video of that team.. Some of the best Gopher basketball and most exciting games we ever experienced... 20 years seems too long but in my memory, IT ONLY SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY!!!
