Minnesota has put a lot of offers for wing forwards, in recent weeks.. I dont think that is anything that the fans need to "read into" as those long wings are so good for flexibility, both on offense and defense.. But one thought keeps running through my head as I think about it.
The thought is "KEEPING AMIR COFFEY ON THE FLOOR AND HEALTHY" as best as possible.. He has had those nagging injuries. He just brings so much to the table for the Gophers, in many areas, when he puts his mind to it. Depending on the matchups against opponents, he may need to 'mix it up' down low more as opposed to staying out on the perimeter, on defense.. The QUESTION IS if the staff may consider moving Amir Coffey to an off guard after this coming year.. That would reduce the amount of times he would have to go down low on defense, theoretically, and maybe reduce that opportunity to re-injure the shoulder. Coffey can pass well enough on the perimeter and can shoot outside. He would have a huge size advantage on most 2 guards and is probably athletic enough to defend MOST opponent's scoring guards. His length would be a nightmare for opposing defenses at the guard spot as well as on the other end of the floor, he could defend the screen/roll well with that length. I know his Dad mentioned that Amir wanted to play guard when he came to the college game.
How that would affect recruiting in 2019 is that, strategically, Minnesota could recruit more small forward types.. I like the games of Christian Braun, the Turkish kid Gultekin. Malik Hall if he was interested, even that Beren kid from Virginia that was mentioned recently.. Kids that would be tough enough to mix it up with opposition small forwards.. I do like the Myron Douglas kid from Detroit as well, if he was to be considered and he liked Minnesota.. To me, we have to get 2 of those guys in the 2019 recruiting class including another off guard.
We need another off guard in this class and Austin Crowley would be the guy I like, if I could choose. The bigs are a different story... I SO SO SO SO wish that Zeke Nnaji would consider Minnesota. Just love his game. Same with Matthew Hurt but what has been commented does not sound promising, either way.. Trey Jackson would be a great get and I honestly think we should target 2 bigs and 2 wings/shooting guards for this next class. Even if we have to wait to get another grad eligible player in the spring.
