The Aggies are playing their second game of the season while Minnesota is opening its second season under head coach P.J. Fleck.
"I think it will certainly be an advantage for (junior quarterback) Matt Romero," said Martin of his junior college transfer quarterback, who made his first FBS start against Wyoming. "He got that first game out of his system and he understands the speed of the game so he's been sharper in practice. Hopefully those penalties will disappear because it's the second game.
"The disadvantage is that it's a short week for us in practice and we have a couple guys banged up on defense. But overall I'm glad we are playing early. I would hate to sit around and wait for a week after the way we played (Saturday)."...
Martin said players have responded in meetings and practice on Sunday.
"We just want to get that bad taste out of our mouth as quickly as possible," NM State senior defensive lineman DeShawnte Lloyd said. "Having this quick turnaround will be a big thing for us."
Lloyd said players have worked to recover physically and his teammates are looking forward to returning to the field against a Power 5 opponent.
"One of the negatives from the quick turnaround is not as much time to prepare for the offensive line and to get the game plan down," Lloyd said. "It could be difficult, especially going to a Big Ten team, but we are pretty excited going into this game."..
Aggies injured on the defensive side of the ball
New Mexico State could be without its top two tacklers from Saturday.
Middle linebacker Javahn Fergurson and weak side linebacker Leon McQuaker were both injured on Saturday against Wyoming. Fergurson is doubtful with a knee injury and McQuaker is questionable with a knee injury, Martin said.
McQuaker led the Aggies with 18 tackles against Wyoming and Fergurson was second with 15 tackles. Jonathan Hood was listed on the two-deep as the starter for Thursday if McQuaker does not play and senior Lui
Defensive end Jassavia Reese also suffered a knee injury against Wyoming and is doubtful for Saturday.
True freshman Donovan King and converted tight end Jackson Solbeck filled in for Reese on Saturday and should split time on Thursday.
