I remember when I was little hearing Ray Christiansen for the first time. Will always associate him with Gopher football. Can remember the Scott brothers, Ray and Hal... Ray made his name with the Packers but I think both brothers ended up in the Twin Cities at the end of their careers. Ray was the ultimate MINIMALIST when announcing games.. The action spoke for itself without him babbling on..When I was young, Lindsey Nelson did quite a bit of play by play for the Vikings on CBS. Remember him like it was yesterday.
While I am reminiscing, I remember that in the NFL when I was very young, it was Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshier then John Madden when he retired from coaching... The NFC was covered by CBS to start and then Fox....... NBC covered the AFC and remember Curt Gowdy with Al DeRogadis then Merlin Olson as the color guy...Of course, Monday Night Football on ABC with the smooth voice of Frank Gifford on play by play with Howard Cosell and Don Meredity as color commentators..... I though Dan Dierdorf kinda gave a great perspective from a "lockerroom approach" later on. Wasn't as big of a fan with Joe Namath on MNF.. I think Al Michaels was very very good. Al Michaels might have been as good or better than any other MNF announcer
College football?? There is only one on the national level that I think about as the best and that is Keith Jackson.. The greatest college play by play I heard...Brent Musberger has been at it for a long time and his voice ties me to my teen years. I loved Ara Parseghian and even Frank Broyles as color commentators. Just what makes me think of the more simple days.
College basketball?/ No matter what anyone says, I think Dick Vitale has done as much to further the popularity of the game than anyone... When he leaves, there will be a legacy like no other. Al McGuire, Billy Packer and the legendary Dick Enberg(who was versatile in so many sports as a legend).. I loved their chemistry on the floor as announcers.
In baseball?? Gowdy and of course Vin Scully... Most of you never heard the regional broadcasts of Reds games with Marty Brennamen and Joe Nuxhall that were legendary..Smooth in the booth.. Ernie Harwell of the Tigers had to be one of my personal all time favorites... A legendary voice from a time past. Nothing was better than working outside late at night in your garage or sitting on a porch in the summer while hearing the soothing grandfatherly voice of Harwell doing a Tiger game.
DOES ANYONE CREATE THAT POTENTIAL LEGACY AS YOU SEE IT, TODAY??? I do like Brad Nessler. I think he is someone that brings an association to big time football and basketball... Still love the calls of Jim Nantz for the Final Four and the Masters.. Those are modern day guys.. I would say that I do enjoy Kirk Herbestreit as well. Would love your thoughts!!!
