I know this is an old topic but its revealing on Ben's reasons to avoid UST and also the process of NC schedule.
"I think it’s really hard to justify why that would benefit us, when I feel there’s so much to lose.” Really? Is a loss to N. Texas any worse? UST could fill the barn which is something Ben's schedule has failed to do. Field a team that is better than St. Thomas Ben then you won't have to worry about losing. A BIG school afraid to schedule UST is an embarrassment.
Johnson said he sought teams that resembled specific Big Ten opponents. So UST plays some type of foreign basketball? How does that apply to playing a post season opponent that differs greatly from BIG opponents? IMO, its an opportunity for this team to grow. Quit hiding behind Mom's skirt Ben.

Minnesota's non-conference schedule all about basketball rankings
And the Minnesota won't play Division I St. Thomas in non-conference play anytime soon, though the women's teams could meet sooner.
