Minnesota has had a lot of players that were either legacy recruits or their Dad's were star players even into the NFL.... The most recent obviously are Antoine WInfield Jr., and Thomas Barber...Maxx Williams, the other Barber brothers, Olson brothers, and many many more. There is something to be said for fathers and even moms who were athletic that at least provides the athletic framework for their kids, even if the parents did not coach them.. I would bring up Austin Hollins in basketball but I am sure that others would bring up Ralph Sampson III as not such a good recruit but great athletic genes.
I grew up a Vikings fan so I grew to hate the Packers and the Cowboys... Its ironic that some of my best friends and Dad's side of my family who love those teams I despise... But one player I always had a lot of respect was Emmit Smith for the Cowboys. I am sure someone can bring up some controversial thing about him but I ALWAYS thought he carried himself as a pro and seems like a genuinely hardworking, respectful, and nice individual..I felt the same about Antoine Winfield Sr, by the way.... To me, I always like to see if the "fruit has not fallen far from the tree" when watching prospects from parents who were star athletes.. Dont always turn out to be college prospects but a lot of times they do.
Emmitt has a son coming through high school.. Sophomore RB EJ(I am sure stands for Emmit Junior) Smith just had a huge day last Friday(200 yards rushing with 5 tds)... I understand he is a pretty good player... I watched his running style on video and very much like his dad...Needs to lower his pad level a bit through the hole but the same cuts and ability to finish runs as his dad... His only offer that I am aware is Jackson State, at this point... We have recruited Dallas well in the past and this kid goes to Dallas Jesuit High School...Like his Dad, he catches the ball well and blocks pretty good in pass protection. 5-11 190lbs as a sophomore in high school so he will probably be over 200lbs by the time he graduates. Just thought I would bring him up as I understand that his parents have really prioritized to raise this kid the right way and athletic genes are there...Maybe the Gophers could get in early on this kid and who knows what might happen if we did just that??
