Senior Emmit Carpenter and sophomore Antoine Winfield Jr., were honored by the Big Ten today for their outstanding play in Minnesota's 21-14 win against Fresno State on Saturday.

Carpenter was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on field goals of 50 and 53 yards in the win. The 53-yard kick tied his career high and for the second time in his career he made two 50-plus field goals in the same game. Carpenter made kicks of 52 and 53 yards in a win against Purdue in 2016. Adam Bailey is the only other Minnesota kicker with two made field goals from more than 50 yards (50 and 52) in the same game, as he accomplished the feat versus Penn State on Oct. 18, 1997.

Carpenter now has 201 career points (40 FGs, 81 PATs), which ranks him sixth all-time for a kicker and ninth among all players. His 40 career field goals tie him for fifth with Jim Gallery on Minnesota's all-time list.

Winfield was honored by the conference for the second straight week, but this time he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Seven days ago, he was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after an electrifying 76-yard punt return. Winfield secured a Minnesota win against Fresno State when he made an interception in the end zone late in the fourth quarter. Much like his punt return, the acrobatic takeaway went viral and was the talk of college football late Saturday night. Winfield also added five tackles in the win.

This is the third time that Carpenter has been recognized by the conference as the Special Teams Player of the Week. He was also honored on Oct. 3, 2016, and Nov. 7, 2016.

Winfield is the first Gopher ever to be honored with two different Player of the Week awards in the same season. Teammate Rodney Smith had previously been named Special Teams Plyer of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week, but not in the same season.
