Sid opened up inquiring about fan interest in Gopher Football during the coaches last road trip, Fleck said there was record crowds and that people are very excited about Gopher Football. They have a few stops left, and he can’t wait to get back on the road.

There are 6 camps on the University of Minnesota football camps, made up of about 150 kids total. The kids are there to be evaluated, but also to be taught. There are also four satellite camps that the Gopher coaches will be attending in Chicago, Ohio, Dallas, and Atlanta. The University of Minnesota coaches are the ones teaching the camps. They want to Evaluate, Educate, and Excite. PJ also mentioned that they had two more in-state commitments Friday night, and that is going to be pivotal for us going forward, getting Minnesota kids excited to stay in state.

Coach Fleck wants the kids to travel and go abroad the first two weeks of summer once they are finished with school, because he believes it can develop them spiritually and socially.

The Gopher football team is only allowed a few hours with coaches during the summer, but they are with the strength coaches all summer lifting. The football team runs their own practices during the summer run by the captains. Fleck does not want them to be burnt out by the time camp starts in the fall.

Of the 22 players that had surgeries from spring practice, not all of them are healthy yet. Most of them will be ready by training camp except one or two of them. PJ mentioned that he wants them available in the summer, because if they are ready to start running and then training camp starts, they won’t really be ready.

The incoming freshmen will be here next week to start summer school. The kids are excited to move in and the coaches are excited as well.

There are one or two scholarships available for the 2017 class. Coach commented that they will use it if the need is there, but he won’t use it just to use it. If they decide to not use it this year, they can hold it and have those scholarships carry over to the 2018 class.

Training camp safety and health is extremely important. Coach didn’t list any specifics, but a few of their techniques they used at Western Michigan they will carry over here to ensure their safety. A tackling circuit is used here with four different types of tackling when the athletes are on campus. Fleck commented on watching film that are “kamikazes”, willing to strike and tackle. Then, they will teach them how to stay safe doing so.

For player’s transferring as a graduate transfer, Coach Fleck mentioned a lot of things behind the scenes that need to be cleaned up. He didn’t say he was for it or against it, but that he wishes things were cleaned up. There’s a lot of positives, and a lot of negatives.
