If you listen at 8:45 into the post game press conference, you hear Coach Fleck deal with a discussion we had a few days last week... He talked about WHO he wants to set the edge on defense on those outside running plays by the opponents.. I thought he would want the DEs to do it but Coach Fleck and presumably Coach Smith want the DEFENSIVE BACKS to come up and set the edge.. That changes how the DEs and LBs play because of responsibility.
He wants those DEs and LBs to play DOWNHILL which means aggressive and fast... Our secondary is young and it made me understand a bit what the problem probably was in the Michigan State game.... That corner or safety has to make a beeline to the outside on the line of scrimmage once the running play presents itself by the opponent.. He wants the ends to go to the ball with the LBs.... If our secondary is young and that does not get understood or communicated well, then no secondary person is there to set the edge and it becomes a race to the sideline.. Here I was blaming the DEs when the secondary is the one that has to step up a bit. Just thought it was interesting that Coach Fleck dealt with that issue.
