Strengths: tenacity, motor, unbelievable blitzer

Jack Pyburn is a 6’4”, 250-pound linebacker/defensive end from Bolles in Jacksonville, FL. Pyburn became Golden over offers from Georgia Tech, Memphis, Wake Forest, and Coastal Carolina among other mid-major DI teams.

When I watched Jack’s film after about 30 seconds or so I said, “I wonder if he wrestles. He plays like a wrestler”. Turns out he placed 3rd in the state in the 220-pound division with a record of 4-1. That is type of player that Jack is. Pyburn has an unbelievable motor and is always trying to find the ball. I love the tenacity that he plays with whether it be chasing down a ball carrier from the back side, rushing a quarterback, or blowing up a running back trying to step up in pass protection.

Built from the same mold as a Carter Coughlin and Thomas Rush, Jack is a player who probably doesn’t have the ideal foot speed for linebacker at the next level but will fit perfectly in my opinion at the R position for the Gophers. Jack is better the closer to the ball he is where his wrestler mindset and mentality really shine. Always attacking, always looking to find the ball, I am really impressed with the way he plays in that regard.

As someone like Coughlin and Rush, there will be a learning curve without a doubt at the R spot. It is much different than at linebacker where he is off the ball and can have a running start. He will have to learn how to anchor much larger opponents at the LOS and mix in pass rush moves when the opportunities present themselves. Wrestlers tend to be workhorses and grinders, and I imagine Pyburn will be much of the same. I like the pickup.
