I know the Jones fans are going to say he's better than his stats indicate. I disagree. He is better in some ways but worse in others. His assists are inflated because of who he plays with. He had very little pressure on him. He had many sub-par games, but it never mattered because his teammates were so good. A dream season. To his credit, he was exactly what Duke University needed. A great ball-handler and free-throw shooter. But everything else was average. 4th-best player on the team (arguably tied for 3rd). Won Final Four MVP despite a 9 point (in 37 minutes), 3-8 shooting game....when Okafor, Winslow, and Cook all had 17-19 points with 50-71% shooting. And it's not like he lit-it-up in the final game (7-13 shooting). Now just for fun, let's compare Nate Mason's stats:
26.1 min 9.8 pts 2.8 ast 1.1 to 1.8 stl .409 fg .613 ft .389 3pt
If Mason were to play 33.9 minutes, he'd average 12.7 points. Less assists feeding Elliot and Mo rather than Okafor....but more steals. Shooting is equal. The only difference is free-throw shooting. I'd give Mason a 'B-' by the way, but an 'A' for grade compared to ranking. Lastly, for those of you who think Jones deserves straight-A's....do you want me compare his stats to the best college players instead of Mason?? I can do that.
