Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca asked Annexstad to be accurate with short passes early and seemed to let him go deeper downfield as the game progressed. They favored slant routes, with Annexstad connecting with Tyler Johnson on a first-quarter touchdown...

MANY FRESHMAN PLAY

The Gophers’ total of 15 active true freshmen was a huge jump from three in all of 2017. The new redshirt rule, which allows players to play four games without losing a year of eligibility, certainly contributed to the increase. It will be interesting to see how many of these players become regular 2018 contributors.

Three expected to stick are Annexstad, Bateman, who had five receptions for 52 yards, and cornerback Terell Smith, who was tied for the team high with eight total tackles and a team-best three pass breakups...

Fleck told KFAN 100.3-FM that he has a color-coded chart that delineates which freshmen he expects to play four games and when they might play them. “It’s strategically placing them,” Fleck said on his weekly radio show...

SO MANY PENALTIES

The Gophers were the least-penalized team in the country last year (3.3 per game) but committed nine penalties worth 92 yards on Thursday. “We know we failed a lot and we have a lot of things that we have to clean up, but I think teams make and have the biggest growth from Game 1 to Game 2,” running back Rodney Smith said.

WILDCAT SO SOON?
