MANY FRESHMAN PLAY
The Gophers’ total of 15 active true freshmen was a huge jump from three in all of 2017. The new redshirt rule, which allows players to play four games without losing a year of eligibility, certainly contributed to the increase. It will be interesting to see how many of these players become regular 2018 contributors.
Three expected to stick are Annexstad, Bateman, who had five receptions for 52 yards, and cornerback Terell Smith, who was tied for the team high with eight total tackles and a team-best three pass breakups...

The Gophers were the least-penalized team in the country last year (3.3 per game) but committed nine penalties worth 92 yards on Thursday. “We know we failed a lot and we have a lot of things that we have to clean up, but I think teams make and have the biggest growth from Game 1 to Game 2,” running back Rodney Smith said.
