Today's practice was the windiest yet. Gusts were ripping on the flag poles making things quite hectic.
Isaiah Gentry and Alex Mayes were two new additions to the orange jersey (injured) group today. Mayes has a foot injury and Gentry had a tight hamstring so they didn't want to risk it. WR Desmond Gant remains out with a concussion. Walk-on TE Noah Scarver was back practicing as well.
Team only tackled for a few series as it was just play to the whistle before then but here are some notes from today.
Notes:
A couple guys who are really playing well of late are sophomore wide receiver Eric Carter and senior defensive lineman Robert Ndondo-Lay. Carter has been getting a lot of the 1st team reps with the offense goes to a three receiver set and he's been making the most of it. Carter is a good possession receiver who runs crisp routes and that's exactly what the offense needs. Wolitarsky, Maye and Carter are all good on the short and intermediate routes, which I'd be willing to bet we'll see a lot more of than last fall. Gentry will be the home-run threat along with Gant, but Carter has been doing well with increased reps. Ndondo-Lay has been teamed up with Gary Moore at the defensive tackle position and he's a guy I've noticed more and more making plays each practice of late. Using his long frame to disengage with the guards and centers and peeking into the backfield to get the back.
Another guy who played well today is senior Eric Murray. I know I know, no surprise as he's the best player on the defense, but Murray picked off a pass today and was a lockdown corner on all routes. On his INT, Murray broke of the route he was covering to jump in front of the receiver for the INT. Very good news as if Murray can get his ball skills to even 75% of what Boddy has, this could be a special year.
Two additional notes are that Cody Poock is still really good and that FG unit ran a fake field goal that ended up to him lobbing to a giantic Nate Wozniak for a conversion. Just how everyone on GI wants it to happen.
I think things will definitely change along the OL when Jon Christenson gets back to 100% this fall. Does that mean Christenson heads back to center? Or will he slide to guard? I don't know. Something that's near the top of my list this fall.
I'd say Bobek starts against TCU until I see Christenson 100%.
A strong Gopher lean, but remember that his parents are from Oklahoma and with the Okie State offer, they want him to take a long look down there. He'll visit there in two weeks.
Jones is getting more snaps at slot than RB right now.
Guys getting reps at PR are Craig James, KJ Maye, Berkley Edwards and Briean Boddy-Calhoun.
Guys getting reps at KR are Jalen Myrick, KJ Maye, Berkley Edwards, Briean Boddy-Calhoun and Rodney Smith.

Ekpe brothers. Both have a good chance to start and will play a large role determining the success of the defensive line.Originally posted by bradt42:
Of the four sets of brothers which set do you expect to have the greatest impact this fall? Matt/Mitch Leidner. Scott/Hank Ekpe, Alex/Connor Mayes or Gary/Tyler Moore?

I think he's going to be an interesting guy to watch at camp this June/July. He's a big kid around 6'2" and showed well at an Adidas event in Michigan last weekend, so I think he could be in the conversation for an offer. Already has a couple Ivy league ones.Originally posted by Neverender612:
RB,
Bowman's a new name for me. Where does he stand in an offer pecking order?
Not that I know of at this time.Originally posted by gopherinparadise:
Ryan, do any of the uncommitted in-state prospects have "handlers"?
That's a good question.I think Bobek has looked very solid this spring at center and I think is the clear no. 1 right now at that position.Originally posted by kekambas114:
what's the word on how the C position is looking, is Bobek pulling away or is it really just waiting for Joe C to come back? and where do you think it will be come TCU....

Definitely. He's been to four or five at least now and will be back Saturday and for the Spring game.Originally posted by deep_six:
Seems like Kegel's been at a lot of practices ... gotta think that's an encouraging sign.

Nugget is the primary RB yes. He's gotten the first team carries when it matters.Originally posted by MOGopher:
Is Nugget looking like the primary RB and is Jeff Jones getting more snaps as a slot receiver vs RB?

Forgot to answer this last time so my bad.Originally posted by dwwd:
I didn't see anything in there about KR or PR, who other than Myrick will be back there?
