Short note today. Very similar practice and drills to yesterday.

Another perfect day for practice outdoors at the U. The players wore helmets, jerseys and shorts today. I noticed Alex Mays and Maxx Williams watching practice. Mays is tall and lean, I would guess 6’5” 250lbs.

A few players changed jersey colors today, Kirkwood had a noticeable limp and wore orange, while Ra’Shede Hageman and Dexter Foreman wore brown. Foreman didn’t take a snap and Hageman participated fully.

It is amazing to note the change from a year ago. Almost all of Coach Kill’s first spring practice was used for technique work. This year, the pace is good and the team already runs plays as a team.

In the half shell (a 7 on 7 type drill that only uses half of the field), Phil Nelson showed the arm and athleticism that made him a sought after prospect. On consecutive passes he hit a quick out to Marcus Jones, and followed it up with another strike on a roll-out to Marcus. A series later, Nelson connected up the seam to Victor Keise with a perfectly thrown ball. An hour later- Phillip reminded the hundred-or-so spectators that he’s only a freshman when he clearly struggled to get the play in, threw two consecutive poor passes, and fumbled. The fumble drew some very personalized coaching from Coach Kill. Overall- Nelson looks good and appears to be having the same struggles that Shortell had last fall.

Speaking of Shortell- He seems to be moving around a little better than a year ago. In the full team portion- Max was able to sidestep a corner blitz from Stoudermire and turn up field for a nice gain. While he certainly doesn’t have speed- he seems to be a little more flexible and fluid on the run. Max threw a pick in the half shell to Baltazaar, who showed nice hands and body control on the interception.

Early in the day- MarQueis struggled with his accuracy. He had a few over thrown passes and a few that skipped off the ground on the way to their target. On consecutive plays in the pass shell- MarQueis had telegraphed a pass that was easily swatted away by Vereen and had a ball intercepted by Manuel. Gray more than redeemed himself in the full team portion. To end the team portion- MarQueis would’ve connected on 8 passes in a row, if it weren’t for a dropped ball that hit Moses Alipate in the facemask. A slant to Barker, Goodger on a roll out, an impressive connection up the sideline to Green against Vereen, Crawford-Tufts on a short crossing route, Rabe deep up the seam, a quick out to Moulton and another quick slant to Barker- all complete and right on the money. Gray even mixed in a few would-be big runs, however- because there is no contact for the quarterback- they’re quickly whistled dead.

Another large chunk of practice was spent on the kicking game. It appears as though all of the special teams are already installed- another vast difference from a year ago.

Cobb has above average vision and does a nice job of finding the hole. It will be interesting to see if the added weight (he’s huge now) benefits him or hurts him as a runner.

Even after the knee injury, Marcus Jones appears to be the quickest and fastest guy on the team. He is lightning quick, and I have no doubt that he’ll be 100% by fall.

Cooper was back today with a cast on his injured wrist. He took his spot back on top of the depth chart for some of the team pass defense drills. This pushed walk-on Dominic Schultz back to second team.

Although I had never heard of Schultz before yesterday- he looks the part and moves around well. I’m very curious to watch how he progresses this spring.

#42 playing DE (I wrongly recorded it is 92 yesterday) must be Quinn Bauducco???

Brendan Beal wore orange again today and worked out with the trainers on the side.

Moulton does 10 pushups every time he drops a ball... It reminds me of the movie Major League.
