I'll be posting stuff from the Athletic Communications department about some of the non-revenue sports periodically. The latest on baseball:
The University of Minnesota baseball program will be represented in the 2015 Northwoods League Major League Dreams Showcase as seven Gophers were tabbed to participate in the annual event. Toby Anderson, Austin Athmann, Eddie Estrada, Matt Fiedler, Lucas Gilbreath, Jordan Jess and Dan Motl make up the Gopher contingent at this year’s prospect game, set to take place August 4th in Madison, Wis.
Minnesota’s seven selections are the most by any school represented in the showcase and more than doubles the next closest institution. Nevada ranks second on the list with only three players chosen to participate. The Gophers also have the most representatives in the league by any school with 24.
Participants are hand-selected by Major League Scouts to partake in pregame workouts in front of the panel. The Northwoods League’s elite talent then dips into double-header action to close out the showcase.
Anderson (Duluth Huskies) has made 10 appearances on the mound this summer, picking up at least one strikeout in every outing. He holds a 4.81 ERA through 43 innings pitched on the mound.
Athmann (St. Cloud Rox) has already flexed his muscles at a Northwoods League event, having been selected for the Home Run Challenge during the All-Star Break. The slugger has accumulated 47 hits with nine of them being for extra bases.
Estrada (Willmar Stingers) touts a .355 average in 29 games this summer. The soon-to-be freshman has picked up 20 hits in his last eight games played with 16 RBI in that span.
Fiedler (Rochester Honkers) is hitting at a .331 clip with five doubles and five homers. The two-way player has also picked up 40 strikeouts in as many innings on the hill.
Gilbreath (St. Cloud Rox) is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 35 innings of work. He holds a 2.2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio this summer.
Jess (La Crosse Loggers) has made 18 appearances out of the bullpen this summer and touts a 1.70 ERA. The southpaw has been keeping hitters off-balance with 36 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .163.
Motl (Willmar Stingers) leads his team in doubles, triples and walks and boasts a .445 on-base percentage as the leadoff hitter. The outfielder was also a participant in the Northwoods League All-Star Game last week.
