No. 3 Gopher Volleyball
Minnesota (12-1) dropped its first match of the season and fell two spots, now tied for third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I Coaches Poll with Big Ten rival Penn State, each with 1,404 points. Florida claimed top honors with 58 first-place votes. The Gophers and Nittany Lions each held on to one top tally.
Previously: The Gophers lifted the lid on Big Ten play last weekend, defeating Michigan in four sets on Friday night at Maturi Pavilion, but the team snapped a 40-match home winning streak Sunday as Michigan State claimed a 3-0 victory.
Up Next: The Maroon & Gold will be on the road for the next two weekends beginning Friday night at Nebraska. The match-up between the Gophers and Cornhuskers will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
No. 3 Gopher Women’s Hockey
Minnesota (26-8-5 a season ago) landed in the third-place position in the preseason U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) Division I Women’s Poll released last week. The Gophers claimed four first-place votes, while top-ranked Clarkson notched 10 and No. 2 Wisconsin just one.
Previously: The Gophers shut out the South Korean National Team in their lone exhibition outing of the preseason, defeating Korea 4-0 at Ridder Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Up Next: The Maroon & Gold will open the regular season this weekend as Merrimack (Mass.) College comes to Minneapolis for a two-game set on Friday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 1.
No. 3 Gopher Men’s Hockey
Minnesota (23-12-3 last season) claimed the No. 3 position in the preseason USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll released earlier this week. Last year’s National Champion Denver holds the top spot and 48-of-50 first-place votes.
Up Next: The Gophers, picked to lead the Big Ten once again this season, will crack open their season on Sunday afternoon as the Maroon & Gold hosts Alberta in exhibition action. The following week, the team will travel up Interstate-35 to take on Minnesota Duluth on the Bulldogs’ home ice in the first round of the 2017 Ice Breaker Tournament.
No. 20 Gopher Women’s Cross Country
Despite a solid showing at last weekend’s Griak Invitational, Minnesota shifted down one spot from a week ago in this week's U.S. Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Cross Country Women's National Poll, now sitting 20th in the nation. The Gophers are also second in the Midwest Region.
Previously: The Gophers finished third among 18 teams at the 32nd annual Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Course. Senior Madeline Strandemo finished 10th to lead the way as Minnesota place three in the top-13.
Up Next: The Maroon & Gold will be in action at two meets this weekend. Some Gophers will head across the border to compete at the Wis.-Eau Claire Blugold Invite on Friday evening while others will compete Saturday at the Louisville Classic 5K in Louisville, Ky.
