GOPHER TEAMS BRING HOME NCAA ACADEMIC HONORS
May 16, 2018
The NCAA announced Wednesday that seven different Gopher programs earned Academic Progress Rates (APR) Public Recognition Awards this year. These annual awards recognize collegiate programs that score among the top 10 percent of all programs in each sport based on the most recent multi-year APR numbers.
In each of the past four years, the University of Minnesota has been the nation's top public school with respect to the highest percentage of its teams earning APR Awards. With honors for seven of their programs this year, the Gophers remain among the nation's best public schools once again.
"It's not a coincidence that Minnesota continues to appear at the top of many academic categories, including APR awards," said Athletics Director Mark Coyle. "These honors don't happen by accident. There's a shared commitment to academic excellence across our department. Our student-athletes, our staff, and our coaches all deserve credit for making academic success a top priority."
Baseball, men's cross country, women's golf, men's hockey, women's and men's tennis, and women's swimming and diving all extended streaks for picking up APR awards. This year was the third straight for hockey and cross country. For the swimmers, divers and golfers, this marks their fifth consecutive honor. It's six in a row for women's tennis and seven for baseball. Men's tennis continued the most impressive streak at Minnesota with an incredible, eighth-straight recognition. That is not only the longest current run for any Gopher program, it's also one of the longest active streaks in the country across all sports.
"By almost every measure, Gopher student-athletes are achieving great things in the classroom," said J.T. Bruett, director of the Lindahl Academic Center. "Whether that measure is APR and APR awards, graduation success rate, conference and national academic honors or grade-point average, our student-athletes are setting the standard for what academic success looks like at the Division I level."
The NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate every spring. This announcement highlights teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
APR provides a real-time snapshot of a program's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent multi-year APRs are based on average scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.
Single-year and multi-year APRs for all Division I teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced on May 23.
