STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota hits the road for the first time, traveling to the Ocean State for a matchup with Providence as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
• Monday’s game is the first time that Richard Pitino will face his alma mater as a head coach. Pitino, a 2005 graduate of Providence, was a team manager during his undergraduate years. He has faced the Friars as an assistant coach five prior times, going 3-2 in that span (Northeastern 0-1, Louisville 3-1).
• The Gophers are ranked 15th nationally in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Polls. It marks the first time that Minnesota has begun the season as a ranked squad since 2009, when the Gophers were 25th in the AP poll. It is the Gophers highest ranking since 1993-1994, when they were 10th entering the season. The Gophers received votes in each of the preseason polls from 2011-13 and 2015.
• Minnesota returns all five starters from last year’s team which set several records en route to a 24-13 record and NCAA Tournament berth. Including that group, Minnesota brings back 87 percent of its scoring, 92 percent of its rebounding and 91 percent of its assist total. Four Gophers received All-Big Ten accolades last year, including First Teamer Nate Mason and Defensive Player of the Year Reggie Lynch. Jordan Murphyearned Third Team plaudits while Amir Coffey was named to the All-Freshman Team, and head coach Richard Pitino was selected Coach of the Year.
• For the second time in three years, the Gophers have signed a top-25 class of prospects. Guard Gabe Kalscheur, forward Jarvis Omersa and center Daniel Oturu all inked their National Letters of Intent to join Minnesota next season.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS
• Providence won its season opener on Friday night, defeating Houston Baptist, 84-55, at home.
• The Friars are receiving votes in both major polls.
• Four PC players scored double figures in the win, led by 13 points from Maliek White. Cousy Award candidate Kyron Cartwright had 10 points and 10 assists against the Huskies.
• Providence was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST preseason poll after finishing third last year and earning their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

GOPHERS VS. THE BIG EAST
• Minnesota has amassed a record of 44-32 against the current membership of the Big East Conference.
• That total includes the following individual opponent records: Butler (3-0), Creighton (7-3), DePaul (8-9), Georgetown (1-2), Marquette (18-14), Providence (2-0), St. John’s (1-1), Seton Hall (0-1), Villanova (1-1), Xavier (3-1). Games that were later vacated are excluded from that list.
• Head coach Richard Pitino is facing a Big East opponent for the third time. He is no stranger to the conference, however, as an alumnus of Providence College and having spent time on the Louisville coaching staff when the Cardinals were in the Big East.

MAGIC MURPH
• Junior forward Jordan Murphy could not have turned in a much more dominant performance to start the season on Friday night.
• Murphy had career-high totals in five categories, finishing with his 22nd career double-double of 35 points and 15 rebounds.
• He was the first Minnesota player with 35 points in a game since Andre Hollins recorded a career-best 41 points vs. Memphis on Nov. 23, 2012. Additionally, his scoring was the most by a Gopher at Williams Arena since Quincy Lewis had 36 against Indiana in 1998, a game that was later vacated.
• Murphy’s career-bests were for points, field goals made (13), field goals attempted (22), free throws made (9) and free throws attempted (15). His previous career-high had been 25 points versus Iowa on Feb. 8, 2017.
• Including last season, Murphy has now scored in double figures in four straight games.
• The San Antonio native was named to the Karl Malone Award watch list for the nation’s top power forward prior to the season.

UP NEXT
• Minnesota returns home for two straight games this week, with a quick turnaround to host Niagara on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
• Live web stream of the game against the Purple Eagles will be available on BTN Plus.
