Gophers Host Nebraska on November 11
Ryan Santoso’s presence looms large at 6-foot-6 and 258 pounds when he steps out onto the field with his fellow Gopher specialists.
Santoso served as the Gophers primary kicker in 2014 and 2015. As a kicker he made 29-of-39 field goals including a career-long field goal of 52 yards against Purdue. That field goal lifted Minnesota to a 39-38 home win. He also converted 76-of-77 point-after attempts and scored 163 points (29 FGs and 76 PATs).
Santoso twice won the Lou Groza National Collegiate Place-Kicker Award "Star of the Week" award. As a sophomore he was named a Lou Groza Award semifinalist and earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors by the conference media and honorable mention by the media.
Going into his junior season in 2016 Santoso made the switch over to punter where his big boot continued to impress. He has punted 110 times in his career and averages 42.0 yards, which ranks fourth in school history. Santoso has placed 39 punts inside the 20 and his career long of 68 yards came against Michigan State this year. He is currently first in the Big Ten (14th in NCAA) with a 45.0 average on 32 punts. The Minnesota record for a senior is 43.4 yards per punt and was set by Santoso’s predecessor Peter Mortell.
Not only has Santoso seen on the field success, but he also has made it a priority to use his platform to make a difference in the community. He is a nominee for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service.”
"This is not about me, or awards or winning it. It is about living the purest and fullest life I can live no matter who is watching or what position I am in," Santoso said after he was nominated. "After football is over I am still going to be the best me I can be."
Off the field Santoso has been active in the community volunteering his time at the Children's Hospital, Boys & Girls Club, Luxton Learning Center and with various sports camps. Inspired by his mother who is a nurse, Santoso said he is most passionate about his time at the Children's Hospital. He spends time visiting with patients and their families and strives to be a positive light.
In the classroom Santoso is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He is pursuing a degree in non-profit management.
Recently Santoso was featured in TUN (The University Network). Read that story here.
