Trip Advisor (which is heavily used and often abused) now puts warning headers on individual hotel listings where assaults, thefts, murders, rapes, etc. have occurred and been reported in news feeds (but only leave the warnings up for three months). At least three of the largest & most popular hotels in Playa del Carmen are now tagged as such.

Then one of the ubiquitous ferry boats was bombed while docked with 21 injuries reported. Bombs were found on at least two other ferries. These incidents resulted in the State Department issuing a travel warning for Playa del Carmen which bans all U.S government employees from visiting the city and urges citizens to use extreme caution. It is the same level alert as is in effect for Baghdad.

Playa was sleepy but cool 20 years ago but it was quickly built up and just as quickly slipped down -- beyond the ongoing Mexican national tragedy, I wonder what changed over that time to bring about this downward spiral...
