We have a big rivalry game tomorrow against Iowa.. Iowa is an interesting team to me in that their record is not very good but they are a team that can be all over the place... They got killed by Northwestern in Evanston and went through a short losing streak around that time...Peter Jok, thier best scorer, has been hurt. But Fran McCaffery believes things are looking up in the program.
Iowa is a team, outside of Jok and some contribution by Dom Uhl who is a junior, that is made up of almost all freshmen and sophomores.. Depending on Tyler Cook's development where he may leave early for the NBA after the next few seasons, my guess is that WHOLE TEAM will be together for another 2 years.. Next year, they have 2 6-11 kids that come from Washington DC and Indiana, that are threats from the perimeter as well as inside... Just the way McCaffery likes his bigs. To me, they could be a team to watch in the next few years if they develop some of their young players...... The freshmen are pretty good(Cook, Cordell Pemsl, and Jordan Bohannon, as well as RS freshman Isaiah Moss who will step into Jok's role next year).. You dont know what you are getting when you play Iowa, this year.... Is it the team that got beat by 35 by Northwestern or the team that beat Purdue and Ohio State?? This is one of those games that it will be interesting to see how we respond after our victory on Saturday....
This is one of those teams that we have to put away as quickly as possible. We cant let those young players get into a run where they gain confidence.. Bohannon is a smart PG for being a freshman but I am guessing that Nate Mason can overwhelm him if Nate plays like he did early in the conference season. Iowa is VERY YOUNG inside but Cook and Pemsl have some talent. We just cant let Jok get going... I am guessing Springs will draw that assignment and it is vitally important that he keeps Jok in check.... Also that Springs play well offensively so that Jok cant get run outs and is forced to play a lot of defense on Springs which will wear out Jok's legs in the course of a game. I think we get the victory but by how much will be determined by the energy we start the game and keep the confidence of those young Hawkeyes down.
