Just to recap, here is the quote from Brian Ferentz.
“I can tell you this much, if the University of Iowa offers you a scholarship and you commit to us, we intend to sign you and we intend to take your commitment."
Here is a recent real world example of doing exactly the opposite of that. (They also told a kid who had committed earlier this year to look around as he wasn't good enough anymore.)

Florida wide receiver Ivan Thomas feels that he is ready to make his college decision. So much so that the 6-foot-3, 197-pound Thomas tweeted Thursday night that he was committing to the Iowa Hawkeyes. However, the Iowa coaching staff typically has a policy that recruits need to visit campus first, so the three-star wide receiver ended up later deleting the tweet.
“Right now, I’m not committed because the coach told me to go up there and visit first, so I took down the post,” said Thomas.
Thomas, whose lead recruiter at Iowa is new wide receivers coach Kelton Copeland, now plans to visit Iowa City this summer to see if everything checks out for both sides.
“I’m going to make it up there early this summer,” Thomas said. “I want to meet all of the coaches and see if the college makes me feel like I’m home.”
As a junior, Thomas caught 34 passes for 542 yards and nine touchdowns at Miami Palmetto High School. In addition to Iowa, he said he is considering scholarship offers from Kentucky and Indiana, among others.
