1) Demry showed what everybody saw at practice: he’s currently the best QB on the roster and it isn’t close. He has a rocket arm, is extremely athletic, and has the ability to go through progressions. Dude can ball, and if he had started all year Minnesota is probably 5-1.
2) ***To be clear, Demry is 100% responsible for his own actions. I’m not saying otherwise. I just think as fans we should rip the coaches, not the players***
Ok, so I’ve seen posters blaming Demry for ‘not rowing the boat earlier’. I don’t like that. Our players are young men figuring things out. Our coaching staff knew coming out of spring that Croft was hands down the best QB on the roster. PJ Fleck gets paid $3.5 million a year, and he and the offensive staff should have spent every spare moment MAKING SURE that Demry was on the right path—even if that meant coach Rock and P.J. took shifts in his damn dorm room. Jerry Kill used to do about that much to keep guys in line. Don’t blame Croft. Blame the guys making big money.
Hopefully, PJ, coach Rock, and Demry have learned a lot from this experience.
And here’s hoping Demry himself makes the most of this awesome opportunity. I think Demry Croft could develop into an elite Big 10 QB over the next couple years, and I’m excited to watch him progress on the field each Saturday.
