Some of these guys, I am sure, will be looked at and evaluated as "Wow, if they can win there, they can win anywhere they coach".. Describes about a dozen young head coaches that seem to be headed to a fraternity where people look at them that way.
When I think of "dead end jobs" in P5 conference teams, I think of Iowa State.. I am sure some people view our program the same way but I disagree.. But if you look at Iowa State's program, they have only 1 coach with a winning record at the school by the time they left Ames, and that is Earle Bruce, in roughly the last 100 years. And Bruce's record is not that much above .500 at Iowa State.
Matt Campbell is a heck of a head coach and we knew that from his days at University of Toledo.. I know he will put all of his heart into making the Cyclones a winning program but it also wont be long before some bigger name programs will want his services, regardless of the buyout.. Of course, that is if he can put together some winning seasons in Ames and he looks to be headed in that direction. At some point, if he continues this trajectory, I can see programs even as big as Michigan or Ohio State offering Campbell down the road, if Urban Meyer wants to get out early... Urban has grandkids now and though he still has a fire for the game, I cant see him staying in coaching past the age of 60 but hopefully I am wrong...He just has too many other interests in family so if he wins a few more nattys, I could picture him hanging up the whistle earlier than a lot of people expect.
I would put DJ Durkin in that boat as well as a coach that I dont think is done moving. Though Durkin has it a lot better at Maryland to recruit than Campbell does at Iowa State.. But I expect big name programs in the SEC or maybe even elsewhere will look at Durkin and offer...Campbell I think will stay in the midwest if possible..
It is funny with all the claims of great football in the SEC, many of their coaches got their training in the midwest or Big Ten area.... Les Miles when at LSU, Nick Saban cut his teeth in coaching in Ohio and Michigan, Urban Meyer when at Florida as he learned the game in Ohio, Bret Bielema at Arkansas, Jones is from the midwest and coaches at Tennessee.. The SEC loves coaches that learned the game in the midwest. I can see one of those schools offer Durkin at some point, especially with his experience at Florida as an assistant.
I think Fleck has a lot in common with Campbell in that they like the challenge to instill their values at schools that have been perenially downtrodden for a long time...I agree that if Fleck wins here, we just have to enjoy the ride and hope this is a DESTINATION SCHOOL... Iowa State probably feels the same for Campbell and Maryland will for Durkin..Jason Candle at Toledo now will be another one in that same boat.. Lincoln Riley got to a destination school at Oklahoma and Tom Herman is going to try to match results with expectations at Texas..... Guys like Nick Saban are starting to get up there in age so the next group of young coaches is going to have to be ready to take over the stage.. Just so we at Minnesota don't get looked at by other people after 3-4 more years of Coach Fleck and say "Wow if you can win at Minnesota, you can win anywhere. I WONDER WHERE FLECK IS HEADED TO NEXT??". Yes the good is that would mean we are winning but we are shooting to be a destination program, not just a stepping stone like many think.
