GopherSports.com: What are your summer plans? Internship? Travel? Playing Soccer? ANYTHING!
Emily Peterson: This summer I have an internship with Grant Thornton, LLP. I will be an audit intern and may be doing some tax accounting. I will also be doing lots of rehab and workouts with Sarah and Corey.
GS: Heading out of school for a few months, what do you like to do with your free time? Hobbies? Interests?
EP: I love to be on the lake! Anything in the water. There is nothing better than anchoring the boat and hanging out with friends in the sun floating in the water. I also love wake surfing, skiing, and wake boarding. I love having the time to spend with friends and family over the summer.
GS: How did you begin playing soccer? What sparked your interest as a child?
EP: Well I started playing soccer like any other kid... My parents signed me up for in-house little league. One of the main reasons I stuck with soccer was because I loved having teammates. All of my best friends were on my soccer team growing up and it was always fun going to practice. As I got older I started to realize that I was pretty good. I was fast and worked hard from a young age and was always looking to learn. All of this sparked my love for the game and helped me continue playing soccer.
GS: What other positions have you played in the past? For instance... if you were a goal scorer in high school, and you are not now, what has that position change been like? Or vice versa...
EP: Oh boy, I played every position. I even tried playing goalie and would go to goalie training when I was younger. In high school I was a center-mid and was the goal scorer. On my club team I played center-mid, outside-mid, forward, and defense. I think that playing all of those positions helped me gain skills that have made me a well rounded player. It also helped prepare me for college because I didn't know what position I was going to be playing and allowed me to have an open mind about where I ended up.
GS: What kind of person would you describe yourself as? What kind of player would you describe yourself as?
EP: I am calm, hardworking, intentional and thoughtful. As a player I am composed, hardworking, level-headed, and always looking to grow.
GS: Have you played other sports in your life?
EP: Yes. I played basketball, gymnastics, track, and tennis. Oh... and T-ball.
GS: Is there a story behind your number you have in college? What about what you had in high school?
EP: I have been #3 for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure it was my first jersey number and I was able to keep it until college. I chose the available number closest to #3. I love my number #4
GS: What made you choose to come to the University of Minnesota? What does it mean to be a Gopher to you?
EP: I chose to come to Minnesota because I am a Minnesota girl through and through. I am a home body and wanted to stay close to home and I love the people in Minnesota. I also knew a lot of the players committed to Minnesota and loved the family feel. To be a Gopher means a lot to me! It's pretty sweet to represent the college I grew up around.
GS: What is your favorite part about playing soccer here?
EP: My favorite part about playing soccer at the University of Minnesota is definitely the people and the opportunities. I love being part of a team that holds such a high standard and is competitive. I love getting to do some of the hardest physical and mental things with the same people everyday. I am so grateful for the opportunities and growth that I have experienced in my time here.
GS: Favorite Soccer player? Favorite Professional athlete?
EP: Favorite Soccer Player: Julie Ertz
GS: Favorite Professional Athlete:
EP: Adam Thielen
GS: Favorite food/meal?
EP: Ideal summer meal: Cheese burger, corn on the cob, salad, and lots of watermelon!
GS: Favorite Sport besides soccer?
EP: Love watching NFL football, college hockey, and college basketball
GS: Favorite place you have traveled to?
