After five commitments last weekend, PJ said his staff does an amazing job of having the large funnel they do, getting kids on official visits, getting to know them, and showing them what Minnesota is about. The early signing period may help for some kids who are looking to commit earlier, but there are some kids who they may go throughout December.

Fleck reiterated the importance of this class as well as the 2018 class in getting Minnesota to where they want to go. “I’m really excited about the players we have coming into this program. We have a lot of playmakers and gamechangers here.”

Sid questioned PJ’s thoughts on transfers coming into the program. PJ said they are getting very creative at adding good players to the roster, not even necessarily transfer wise, but that the team has add talent right now with only about 25 scholarship upperclassmen (juniors and seniors).

There was a new rule in place that kids do not have to ask for their release if they wish to transfer, they are now free to transfer whenever. There were some conference rules in the past that limited to where kids could go, but PJ said doesn’t believe in limiting where a kid can go.

The 2018 class PJ is quite excited for as a lot of players from this class will have to play this year. The coaches are limited to seeing them on the field yet, but the reports from them in the weight room are positive.

A few JUCO kids are committed for the 2018 class and Sid questioned if they will redshirt. Jason Dickson was a name that PJ brought up as someone who he would like to have available for two more years after this one, an indication he may be redshirted.

Jacob Herbers took the honor of hitting the highest point of the indoor football facility.

The Gopher staff is in the middle of camp season holding a few at home, as well as satellite camps over the country. “We’ve found a ton of talent at our camps. Hopefully we’ll see some commitments and reap the benefits of camps. I was a player who got one scholarship based on camp. Now you can verify the film, or verify what isn’t on the film, here. You can see what a player is made of.”

After taking seven offensive lineman commits in the 2018 class, the staff is planning on taking two or three offensive line commitments in 2019. After those two classes, the depth should be better at that position. Quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back, defensive line were also listed as priority positions for the coaches.

Everyone on the team that had offseason surgery should be ready for training camp. Coach Fleck gave special credit to Thomas Barber for sculpting his body and getting rid of baby fat. “He looks like a legitimate Big Ten linebacker. Carter Coughlin the same way.”
