Sid opened again questioning about which sideline the Gophers will be on for next year. A decision has not been made per PJ, but he did say it is his job as a head coach to look at everything and decide what gives them the best chance to win, and a sideline comes into play with that.
Michigan football team is going to Italy, and Wisconsin has also planned to go abroad somewhere. The Gophers do not have anything planned as far as going to another country, however it is something they are looking at. The rules are changing so fast, that it takes a lot of planning when it comes to that sort of a trip. As of right now, there is no current plan to go abroad somewhere.
The coaching staff does not use many recruiting services, however they do use Hudl quite a bit. There is a ton of NCAA rules regarding recruiting services.
Offensive line is a position that lacks depth, PJ said that they will most likely look at incoming freshmen as backups since they do lack that depth. He also mentioned that it will not be fixed until the 2018 and 2019 classes come in.
Gophers center Jared Weyler is on the Rimington Award Watch List for this year, which provides us a strength at the center position. Fleck called him an “incredible football player” on film, since he has yet to see him in person to this point.
Coach Fleck will give the quarterbacks the ability to audible “as much as they can handle”. At Western Michigan, Zach Terrell was given a lot of freedom to audible at his discretion. PJ said that they will give them a second or third play they can audible to, but won’t allow them to call their own random play.
As for student attendance being down for the Gophers, Fleck mentioned that being a problem for him at Western Michigan as well. Having a younger head coach that can connect with students helps, but at the end of the day the gameday experience has to be fun for the students to get them to go to the games, and stay at the games.
“It’s part of building the culture”. Coach mentioned the Badgers “Jump Around” tradition that the students really enjoy, and we must think of something that we can make a tradition of our own.
A lot of young players will play in the secondary this year due to graduation and players leaving the program. He said again that the 2018 and 2019 classes will solve the depth issue. PJ spoke very highly of Antoine Winfield Jr. calling him a “special player”. He will be a glorified SAM linebacker, the nickel, a safety, a corner. “We’ve put a lot on his plate, because he is that special.”
Oregon State will be our second game of the year, and PJ reiterated that it is about us, and that we are not worrying about other teams.
The practice schedule has not been made public yet, but Fleck stated that it is pretty much done. There will be a fair share of practices open to the public. Coach thinks it is important for getting the fans involved.
Sid inquired about seeing publications that had us winning our first seven games, and losing the last five. “That’s why they are publications. They don’t mean anything, we play the games on the field. I’ve been told we’ll go 8-5 and went 1-11, and vice versa. Nobody in the country will put more pressure and expect more of our football team than me and our players. This is a process, a culture.”
The trio spoke about the football team working out at one of the local lakes in the region. PJ wants the state and the football team to have a relationship together.
