PJ opened that turnovers are a big part of the game and typically when a team loses the turnover battle, they will lose the game. The Gophers lost the turnover battle and hence, lost the game. Coach gave them credit for not making mistakes while the Gophers beat themselves.
Sid asked, “Will Blake Cashman play in the NFL?” PJ: “Of course he’ll play in the NFL. I think he’ll be in the league for 8-10 years. He’ll always be able to make a roster since he’s so versatile. He’s a tremendous football player and an even better person.”
“To be a champion, you have to learn how to be a champion and that takes getting beat by champions.” Coach was very proud of the players efforts fighting through things however the turnovers ended up being the difference.
While the offensive line has improved throughout the season, PJ thought they didn’t have one of their stronger performances. He continues to increase his expectations as he sees the group develop.
The team is currently 5-6 and needs a win versus Wisconsin next week to become bowl eligible. “If they are ready to become bowl eligible, then we will become bowl eligible. If we are not ready, then we won’t be bowl eligible. We have to go out and earn it.”
Dave questioned how much power Tanner Morgan has to keep it on some running plays. Fleck said that different plays have different reads so it may be different what he’s actually reading than what the crowd thinks. He gave quite a bit of credit to Northwestern for running a sound scheme and executing it well.
Coach had a lot of kind words about Emmit Carpenter, the former All-Big Ten kicker who will be graduating this year. He called him “a tremendous young man who will be successful in whatever he chooses to do.”
While some players do have games available to reserve their redshirts, Fleck has decided that if a player has only one game left for the redshirt to burn, he will not play them. He doesn’t think it is fair to the player to burn the redshirt on the last game of the season.
“We’ve gotten a lot better this season. Some great things have happened this season that get overshadowed by wins and losses. We are in this for the long haul and I see where it is going. I’m so excited for the future.”
