PJ started off that this year all the quarterbacks on campus don’t have any in-game experience so that’ll be a little different than last year. A few players that had offseason surgeries are going to be able to do some individual drills this spring ball in some capacity.

“We have depth. Not a lot of depth, but we have some depth. Our upperclassmen are going to have to set the example for the younger guys. When the incoming freshmen get here, we’re going to have to get them up to speed quickly since we’re going to use a lot of them.”

On the offensive line, they are going to find out who they should redshirt and who needs to contribute this year. Jared Weyler is coming back from injury and Donnell Greene will be able to go through a full spring practice. Fleck brought up Connor Olson by name as someone that has had a great offseason and he’s excited about the leadership he’ll bring going forward.

PJ wants to use the indoor practice facility as much as possible, but also said that they will rotate between the indoor facility, the outdoor, and TCF Bank Stadium.

One concern for the Gophers this upcoming season is replacing a few defensive tackles, including Steven Richardson. Flecked talked about Gary Moore, Royal Silver, and Nate Umlor (who they’ve moved to defensive tackle) as guys that will have to step up at that position.

“I’m really excited to see how this quarterback battle pans out. We’re going to look at them all. It’s going to be fun to see who rises to the top. Tanner (Morgan) has risen this offseason and the leadership that he has brought. Vic (Viramontes) has come in early and start learning our system which I think has been great for him. It’ll be a fun battle all the way through spring into fall practice.” Fleck did mention Seth Green has had a fantastic offseason and Zack Annexstad too.

The new Athletes Village has a nutrition center, which Fleck called the food, “Elite”. It connects all of the student athletes eating together in that cafeteria, connecting them all as Gopher athletes.

It is a huge benefit for players in high school or JUCO to come in early, if they are able to give up the final semester of high school. Fleck mentioned Daniel Fa’alele, Curtis Dunlap, and Nathan Boe as guys that can get in early, start losing weight, and get them on a Division-I weight program.
