Sid Hartman asked about Row The Boat, and PJ Fleck told about his second son that passed away due to a heart condition. “When you row a boat you can either stop and quit, or keep on rowing.” Fleck said Row The Boat will connect people that don’t have an interest in football, and connect them to the football team and the types of players they will recruit.

Players are working out, doing winter conditioning. Fleck said on Saturday when it was their day off, they brought their position groups together to do extra workouts on the field and watch film. They played wiffle ball the other day, and have taken players out to dinner a few times.

As for the nine players Fleck brought from Western Michigan, he has zero doubt they can be Division I players. “Most of the players had Division I offers from other schools. Can you be the best person you can be and help this team win a Big Ten Championship? We feel like they can.”

Sid questioned the lack of depth at offensive and defensive tackle. Fleck joked that they were counting on Sid to come and play some line for them. They have to be creative with how they manage players during the spring. “We aren’t going to put a band-aid over something and say it’s fixed.” Also went on to say that they weren’t going to fix it with guys who will only be there for a year or two, but that they were going to fix it with high school athletes.

PJ couldn’t comment on the players being re-instated yet, but said they were getting closer to it being clearer for everybody.

The team started taking cooking classes and well as dating classes this year. “We need to produce the best husbands, the best sons, the best fathers from this program, not just the best football players.” Fleck said dating is a lost art in 2017, and that it is an important skill to learn.

The class of 2017 has three scholarships available, Fleck said they want to be very sure of how they use those scholarships. Whether it is a late transfer, or a person that has been cleared academically late, they want to be wise with how they use them. If they don’t use them this year, they will transfer to next year.

Fleck wants morning practices for the fall, and afternoon practices for the spring. Says that morning practices sets the tone for the day, and come noon, players have nothing to do football related the rest of the day. Allows them to focus their attention to academics, tutors, etc. in the afternoon.

As for the spring game in a couple months, Fleck wants football games, including the spring game, to be an event that connects people. “We don’t want people to just be fans of our wins, but of our culture and where the program is headed.”

Last weekend was Junior Day at the University of Minnesota. Coach said there was over 100 men at the Junior Day, and they were hoping for a couple commitments over the next few days.
