For some reason, it wasn't until this morning that I saw Stroke the Post's (STP) live play-by-play analysis of the IL game. I highly recommend it for everyone to read for many reasons. Rather than just make these statements on the thread itself, I wanted to draw greater attention to it by expressing my appreciation for it in a new thread.
I am a general sports fan and think I understand the nature of most major sports pretty well. But football is a very complicated and technical game. I don't know the first things about analyzing specific aspects of play as some here (many of whom are former players and/or coaches at fairly high levels) understand so well.
You have to read all of STP's comments to fully appreciate the thread. I especially appreciated, however, his thoughts about the future. He's sees a time soon when we will be good to great at LB, RB, WR and OL (including great blocking from the tight end position). MN is woefully weak at DE and QB. The secondary can be rebuilt but it will take time. STP is not optimistic about our chances to beat teams the run the ball and can load the box against our running game. Unfortunately, that accurately describes our next five opponents. STP says Fleck can get the job done and I agree. Recruiting is crucial, of course. But watching the OL develop and the OC and DC making the most of what talent they have this year bodes well for the future. Thanks, STP. Go Gophers!
