Talked with some people over the weekend and there will be some changes for the Gopher coaches recruiting areas this spring.
First off, I'm hearing that the staff will not be hitting Florida as hard in past years. One of the thoughts behind this is the staff can get the same caliber or better in areas such as Georgia or Alabama. The top tier of recruits in Florida are always going to go to either Miami, Florida, Florida State or the SEC and even the next tier that Minnesota has always been in are going to SE school or ACC ones as the ACC schools can sell to the recruit and their family that they'll have at least a couple games in Florida a year with Miami and Florida State, so the families can see them play. I've also heard they believe the where as Florida may be over-recruited, areas in Georgia and Alabama are much more under-recruited and they want to capitalize on that.
I've also heard that quarterbacks coach Jim Zebrowski will be focusing a lot more on quarterbacks in the past. Not saying at all that it hasn't been his focus, but more of saying that Zebrowski will be doing a lot more evaluations of the quarterbacks the Gopher staff is interested this spring in-person. So he'll have his recruiting area of Ohio still, but will be seeing quarterbacks outside of his area perform live in other areas around the country. It'll be similar to what Coach Limegrover does with his offensive linemen as he's traditionally the one who goes and sees them live.
Also sounds like the state of California, which in the past the staff had dabbled in, will not be of much focus anymore. Just not enough time to spend out there to do things the way the staff would like.
Past:
Coach Reeves: Michigan and Florida
Coach Sherels: Georgia and Minnesota
Coach Zebrowski: Wisconsin and Ohio
Now:
Coach Reeves: Georgia and Michigan
Coach Sherels: Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin
Coach Zebrowksi: Ohio and quarterbacks
Just a quick summary of the changes:
Reeves and Anderson will now be in Georgia, instead of Sherels and Anderson.
Sherels moves from Georgia to taking over Wisconsin and Iowa as well retaining Minnesota.
Zebrowski stays in Ohio, but loses Wisconsin and gains more of the in-person evaluation of quarterbacks.
Before I get this question, YES Minnesota will still be in Florida as Sawvel still will work the panhandle area and Claeys will do some things down there as well.
All the other coaches area are staying the same to my knowledge, such as:
Poore: Texas
Anderson: Georgia and some JUCO's
Limegrover: Kansas City area and offensive linemen
Phelps: Illinois and Indiana
Sawvel: Alabama, Louisiana, Florida panhandle, some Houston area and Mississippi as well.
