It has been interesting watching the development, additions and changes to the offensive and defensive schemes this year on a game by game progression. I will be curious to see what they do for Maryland this week.
On defense, they came out in a much different base package instead of the nickel look we have been seeing. While that is not totally surprising since NMSU and Fresno St. are passing offenses, the week before us, Miami's qb through over 40+ times. Against the Gophers, he threw half the amount of passes. It was almost as if our coaches knew Miami would revert to a more balanced attack. What that meant for our personnel was seeing a lot more Kamal Martin, and he had a good game. What was interesting for me was that Shenault played CB2 moving off his nickel spot, over both Durr and K. Thomas. Shenault is ok at CB, but I think his skills are better suited for nickel when possible. I still believe both Kiondre and Durr are nicked up as they both have been injured.
On offense, more wrinkles are added every week. We saw Bateman take the end around flip for the first time I believe. I was surprised Miami had it played well since we hadn't seen that yet. We are seeing more RB slip screens which is awesome and the one to Williams on 3rd and 17 was a beauty and very important play. We saw Green both hand off and throw for the first time (I think) from the wildcat look. We ran the outside zone against Miami way more than we saw the first two games. I wonder what will be added this week?
