My elementary/high school went to a 4 day week several years ago to save money. MDE has told them they need to switch back to a 5 day week. The teachers are very much in favor of switching back to a 5 day week and the administrators when answering truthfully wish to switch back as well. They save about 50,000 a year by doing this mostly by cuts to bus drivers and cooks etc. they have had failing test scores and they have gone up slightly but most feel it's due to a school improvement grant they got because they were failing rather than the four day week. The school board brought in the state rep and senator to talk to them the senator didn't say much but the rep told them to do what ever they want and shed support them and MDE can't do anything. The board met with the teachers yesterday and told them it's not about what's best for kids this is about local control. The teachers believe that no matter what MDE says the board is going to schedule a 4 day week. Curious to hear people's thoughts on this?
