Jack Kern:

Strengths:

· Effort. Constantly pursues from the backside. Makes plays he shouldn’t
· Run stuffer. At the college level will be a one gap lineman. Does a good job of warding off blocks, wins 1v1 battles in high school
· Anticipates blocks well; “gets through the trash”

Weaknesses:

· Quickness. His reaction off the ball is pretty good, but he’s not very quick on his feet once he starts running
· Not a pass rusher. His highlight film showed very little pass rushing moves. He’s a power, run stuffing lineman. Built for the interior of a defense
· Good, not great, tackler. Tends to lose his feet and dive at times

With Kern, my guess is he will be a one-technique at the college level. That way he can utilize his strengths of taking on double teams and not have to be used as a pass rusher. Kern does possess good strength and wins battles in high school, but with his lack of quickness he’ll have a tougher time in college. He’ll need to mold his body to lose some body fat, and understand that his role will be as a run-stuffer taking up blocks.
