The Gophers beat Fresno State 21-14 last Saturday and played the majority of the game without dependable running back Rodney Smith. The senior was injured early in the first quarter and missed the rest of the game and it was announced yesterday that the Georgia native will miss the remainder of the season with an injury.
With their star player out, the Gophers turned to true freshman on offense to pick up the slack. That included a pair of 18-year-olds in quarterback Zack Annexstad and receiver Rashod Bateman. Annexstad won't turn 19 until next April, while Bateman turns 19 in November.
Against Fresno State, the duo played anything like teenagers. Annexstad completed 16-of-26 passes for 175 yards and led Minnesota to a fourth-quarter comeback victory. On the season, he has completed 32-of-59 passes for 395 yards and two touchdowns.
Bateman caught five passes for a team-leading 78 yards against Fresno State, as Minnesota moved to 2-0 on the young season. The four-star receiver from Georgia has caught 10 passes for 130 yards this season. Both of those number rank second on the team to Tyler Johnson, who has made 11 catches for 150 yards.
