1882 – Minnesota's first season of collegiate football. The Gophers were 1-1 that year as they beat and lost to Hamline. Minnesota won 4-0, but also lost 2-0 as it joined the college football ranks.
A lot has changed since 1882.
Since then, Minnesota has won seven national championships, 18 Big Ten championships, produced 73 First Team All-Americans and seven Pro Football Hall of Fame members.
Today, Minnesota began practicing for its 135th season (team did not play any games in 1884 or 1885) at the brand-new, sparkling Athletes Village.
Minnesota starts the season on Aug. 30 when it hosts New Mexico State at TCF Bank Stadium. Fans can get a closer look at the team before then as Minnesota is hosting open practices on Aug. 4, 10 and 16.
