It's been done only once before.
In two days when Minnesota opens the season at 6 p.m. on Thursday against New Mexico State, it is expected to do so with walk-on, true freshman quarterback Zack Annexstad under center.
Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck named Annexstad the starter on Aug. 20 and the young signal-caller from Norseland, Minn., is believed to be the second walk-on, true freshman quarterback ever to start a season opener. When Annexstad takes a snap on Thursday from center Jared Weyler, he will join Baker Mayfield as the only walk-on, true freshmen to start their first game. Mayfield started his first game at Texas Tech in 2013 after walking on.
