Freshman Terell Smith broke up three passes in his Minnesota debut
FOOTBALL | 9/5/2018 8:40:00 AM
There has been a lot of talk recently about Minnesota's true freshman on the offensive side of the ball, but the Gophers also started a true freshman at defensive back against New Mexico State in Terell Smith.
The Snellville, Ga., native was tested as the Aggies threw 58 passes last Thursday and many were headed his way as he made his collegiate debut. Smith tied for the team lead with eight tackles and also broke up three passes in his debut. That's impressive considering the most passes that a Gopher broke up all of last season was five and that only six players broke up three of more passes.
Smith brings elite speed to the Gophers, as he won the Georgia State Championship in the 100m (10.39) as a junior and the 200m (21.26) as a sophomore. His personal record in the 100m is 10.32 and in the 200m is 20.84, which made him the fastest Big Ten corner signee since 2010.
