Minnesota leads the Big Ten in time of possession
FOOTBALL | 9/20/2018 7:32:00 AM
The ball. The ball. The ball.
It's a constant refrain around Minnesota's program and through three games, the Gophers have had the ball more than their opponents. Minnesota had the ball for 34:31 against Miami, 36:41 against Fresno State and 34:34 against New Mexico State. Minnesota has outscored its opposition 95-27 in those three games and have five scoring drives this year that have spanned 10 or more plays. In addition, Minnesota has six scoring drives of four minutes or longer. The Maroon and Gold's longest scoring drive this year was a marathon 17-play, 74-yard march that took up 6:21 against New Mexico State.
Through three games, Minnesota ranks ninth in the nation (first in the Big Ten) in time of possession with an average of 35:15. Last year, Minnesota finished its first season under Fleck 41st in the nation in time of possession at 30:57.
Controlling the ball – and the game - has become a hallmark of Fleck's staff as Western Michigan was second in the nation in 2016 with a mark of 34:03.
