Minnesota posted a 48-10 season-opening victory against New Mexico State and the 38-point margin of victory was the largest ever for the Gophers at TCF Bank Stadium. Minnesota had previously beaten Iowa (2014) and New Hampshire (2012) by 37 points at TCF Bank Stadium. The 38-point win was also Minnesota's largest margin of victory since 2006, when it topped Temple 62-0 at home.
Minnesota scored 28 points in the second quarter and 35 in the first half against New Mexico State. The 28 points were the most scored in a quarter since 2015 when the Gophers rang up 28 third-quarter points at Purdue and the 35 points were the most in the first half for Minnesota since it totaled 38 in the first half against Indiana State in 2016.
